Nintendo Issues Takedown Notices to Garry’s Mod Over Unauthorized Content

After 20 years of leniency
by Joe Wilcock on April 25, 2024

Nintendo has issued takedown notices targeting Garry’s Mod, a sandbox game developed by Facepunch Studios that gained popularity for its versatility and modding capabilities. The takedowns are aimed at removing Nintendo-related content from the game, which has been available for close to two decades.

Facepunch Studios confirmed the takedowns in a recent update on Garry’s Mod’s Steam page. The developers acknowledged the situation, stating, “Some of you may have noticed that certain Nintendo related workshop items have recently been taken down. This is not a mistake, the takedowns came from Nintendo.”

The developers expressed understanding towards Nintendo’s decision, noting, “Honestly, this is fair enough. This is Nintendo’s content and what they allow and don’t allow is up to them. They don’t want you playing with that stuff in Garry’s Mod - that’s their decision, we have to respect that and take down as much as we can.”

The sudden enforcement of takedowns by Nintendo has come as a surprise to many, given that Nintendo-themed content has been a part of Garry’s Mod for nearly 20 years. Models of popular Nintendo characters like Mario have been available on the Source engine, adding to the game’s appeal. The flexibility of the Source engine allowed players to enjoy various mods, contributing to the game’s popularity, especially during the early 2010s when it gained traction through gaming YouTube channels featuring multiplayer games like Prop Hunt and Trouble In Terrorist Town.

However, the leniency shown by Facepunch Studios in allowing such content on their platform may have contributed to Nintendo’s decision to take action after years of tolerance. Nintendo has long been known for its stringent protection of its intellectual property and brand image, making the takedowns consistent with the company’s approach to safeguarding its assets.

The removal process began a few months ago, though Facepunch Studios only publicly acknowledged the takedowns recently. Removing all Nintendo-related content from the game is proving to be a monumental task for the developers. In their update, Facepunch Studios humorously appealed to the community for assistance, stating, “If you want to help us by deleting your Nintendo-related uploads and never uploading them again, that would help us a lot.”

It remains to be seen how this situation will impact the modding community and the overall gameplay experience of Garry’s Mod. The removal of long-standing Nintendo-themed content will undoubtedly change the landscape of the game, leaving players and fans to adapt to a new era of Garry’s Mod devoid of iconic Nintendo characters and items.
