Helldivers 2 Developers Look For Solutions For PSN Mandate

Arrowhead Studios is working on a solution
by Tit Krajnik on May 04, 2024

Helldivers 2 developers have found themselves under waves of criticism since it was revealed that all players would have to link their Steam accounts to the PlayStation Network to play the game. The controversial decision has led to review bombing and overall dissatisfaction among gamers, but there might be a solution in sight.

Publisher Sony recently announced that all Steam Helldivers 2 players will have to link their games to a PSN account or lose access to the game. This decision has angered thousands of gamers, particularly due to safety concerns.

Yet the biggest question that arose with the announcement was how those who live in countries without access to PlayStation Network could access the game.

PSN Mandate Might Not Affect Everyone

The PlayStation Network account mandate comes with many problems, especially since it's not available in every country that Steam is. As a result, many players who bought Helldivers 2 on Steam and played it so far soon won't be able to access the game as they can't comply with Sony's account linking rule.

This issue was one of the main points gamers made against the PSN mandate; however, it seems like Arrowhead Studios developers are working on a solution.

Arrowhead Studio community manager Spitz has recently shed more light on the situation via Discord, where he clarified that there are ongoing internal discussions about the mandatory account linking and solutions for it.

"If a better solution is not provided for players who are in regions without PSN coverage, I'm assured that we won't be making the requirement mandatory for those players. We're not going to force people to either break Sony TOS or play the game."

Spitz also reminded the community that the mandate was Sony's decision and not Arrowhead's, and it seems like the Arrowhead team is just as unhappy with the changes as the players.

"The response from our dev teams has been pretty universally negative, and we're looking for better options."

As clarified, those who can't access the PlayStation Network won't be required to link the accounts. However, this doesn't suggest that the PSN account linking is going anywhere, meaning that the mandate will stay put for those who can access the PSN network.
