Everything We Know About Starfield So Far - Release Date, Story, And More

Everything you will need to know about the next big game release from Bethesda.
by Natalie Collazo on March 08, 2023

Starfield is coming in September | PC Gamer

Bethesda has officially confirmed that Starfield, one of the most highly anticipated Xbox Series X games, will launch in September of this year. Despite originally being scheduled for release in the first half of 2023, fans can now look forward to experiencing the new space-faring RPG later in the year.

As the first new IP from Bethesda Game Studios in 25 years, Starfield is a major release and is set to be one of the biggest new games for 2023. Fans are eagerly anticipating the prospect of jumping into a fresh RPG set in a new universe from the team behind some of the best RPGs such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4.

In June, fans can expect a Starfield Direct, which is dedicated to the new adventure, and will provide another look at what the game has to offer. Todd Howard, the game's director, has teased that the studio still has "so much" to show us.

When does Starfield release?

Bethesda has officially announced that Starfield, their new RPG, will be released on September 6, 2023. Initially scheduled for November 11, 2022, the game was delayed to the first half of 2023 before being pushed back again to the new September release window. Todd Howard, in a video posted by Bethesda announcing the release date, addressed fans and acknowledged their long wait for something new from the company. He also expressed the team's eagerness to have players finally experience the game.

What is the story of Starfield?

Starfield is situated in an expanse known as The Settled Systems, which stretches outwards from the Solar System for about 50 light-years. The game's plot revolves around a conflict called the Colony War, which occurred circa 2310, involving the two largest factions, namely the United Colonies and Freestar Collective. The game's timeline is set 20 years after the war, during a period of uneasy peace between the major factions. The player takes on the persona of a customizable character, who is a member of Constellation, a group of space explorers. The game can be played from either a first- or third-person perspective.

What platforms will Starfield be on?

Following Microsoft's $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax Media in 2021, Bethesda Game Studios, the creators of Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6, will launch their new RPG as an Xbox Series X console exclusive, as well as on PC. As part of the Xbox Games Studio collective, Starfield will be available for purchase directly or via Xbox Game Pass / PC Game Pass on its release day, just like all other games in the collective.

Will Starfield be multiplayer?

At present, it appears that Starfield will only be available as a single player game and will not feature any multiplayer or online modes. Nevertheless, there has been some confusion surrounding this matter due to ambiguous statements from the developers. Initially, there was no clear indication that Starfield would be a single player game, and early reveals referred to a "single player campaign," which could imply the existence of a non-single player campaign. Given that Bethesda's previous title, Fallout 76, was a multiplayer RPG, some may have speculated that Starfield would follow suit, particularly given the trend towards monetizable online games among other publishers. However, all indications thus far suggest that Starfield will only be
available as a single player game.
