Everything We Know About The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Gameplay, Story, and More

Are you ready to come back to Hyrule?
by Natalie Collazo on March 29, 2023

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Direct set for tomorrow | Eurogamer.net

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the long-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed Breath of the Wild. The latter was a launch title for the Nintendo Switch and has remained one of the console's greatest titles. However, that title might be snatched away very soon with the release of the second Zelda game native to the console.

With every big release comes questions that need answers! Fortunately, the DailyGamer team managed to get together everything that you might want to know about Tears of the Kingdom before it gets released.

When does Tears of the Kingdom release?

Tears of the Kingdom will officially be released on May 12. Although everyone who played Breath of the Wild always knew that there would be a sequel, this comes a little over five years since the release of the former. Fortunately, fans were able to finally see what they were waiting for during a September Nintendo Direct that talked about the game. Tears of the Kingdom was also officially announced to be finished as of March 28 and some gameplay was shown!

What is the story of Tears of the Kingdom?

Very little is known about the story within Tears of the Kingdom. What we do know is that Link and Zelda return, both with all-new looks. Zelda's hair is cut much shorter and Link now dons a new, tattooed arm that looks to be able to wield different powers. Hyrule has also grown above grown with islands littering the sky, and below ground with tunnels and dark dungeons to explore.

According to the first trailer, the story revolves around a dark entity that has destroyed the Master Sword, leaving it up to Link to reforge it using 'tears' that can be found. Not much was revealed about what that means exactly, but that's just about the gist of it. That, and, of course, finding Zelda who is trapped somewhere underground.

Similarly to its predecessor, Tears of the Kingdom will be an open-world adventure that will rely heavily on the crafting skills of players. Everything from boats to ladders can be created using your imagination and the right tools. The crafting is even more intense now, and you'll need to ensure that you use everything around you to the best of your ability to both arm yourself and get to hard-to-reach places.

What platforms will Tears of the Kingdom be on?

Tears of the Kingdom will release exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. As usual, you can't expect Nintendo to ever release their games on other platforms. What is important to know is if the game will also be compatible natively with newer versions of the Switch if and when they get announced.

Unfortunately, we won't know this until a new console gets announced. So, it looks like Tears of the Kingdom was developed exclusively with current-generation hardware in mind.

Will Tears of the Kingdom have character customization?

Yes, but also no. While you aren't able to customize Link himself to look the way you want physically, you will be able to change his clothes. Similarly to Breath of the Wild, players will be able to obtain and wear different outfits throughout the game. This is both for looks as well as for story elements as well as to take into account whatever the weather is. You'll want to bundle up in the snow!

Are there different pre-order versions of Tears of the Kingdom?

Like every Zelda game, there are tons of different release versions. Of course, there's the base game at $70 USD as well as a collector's edition that comes with the base game, a steel book, an official art book, a steel poster, pins with symbols from the game, and a sweet box to store it all in.

Of course, the special edition OLED Switch was also announced, as well as a special Pro controller themed to the game. You'll absolutely love the white, gold, and green design of the Joy Cons positioned to represent the arm that Link has tattooed. The dock is a beautiful white as well with a golden Triforce emblem and other designs.

Are there any gameplay trailers for Tears of the Kingdom?

Just recently, an entire ten-minute gameplay video was dropped to show off the crafting capabilities and general gameplay. Because we are so close to the official release, this is exactly what we can expect this coming May. For the most part, it looks as though players will need to be acutely aware of crafting and the best ways to get across Hyrule.

However, we can also expect a nonlinear gameplay style that will allow you to play Tears of the Kingdom at your own pace. Breath of the Wild allowed for players to immediately challenge Calamity Ganon within the first ten minutes of the game, and that was considered to be one of the biggest takeaways from how it was designed.

The gameplay is also not very telling of exactly what players should expect throughout the story. Whether shrines and their puzzles or something of the like will be implemented isn't very certain, but you'll definitely have access to a ton of features that will get you to use your brain.
