Everything We Know About Final Fantasy XVI

Unleash a new kind of fantasy.
by Natalie Collazo on June 20, 2023

Final Fantasy XVI's demo launches on PS5 this morning

Final Fantasy XVI is just around the corner! With so much to know about the game, we thought it would be a good idea to consolidate it all in one place, for your convenience. Before reading on, we implore you to check out the Final Fantasy XVI demo on the PlayStation 5 store to get an even better feel for the game. After nearly seven years since the release of the previous installment to the critically-acclaimed franchise, we will be met with a completely new kind of fantasy.

When Does Final Fantasy XVI Release?

You can pick up your copy of Final Fantasy XVI on June 22! It's important to note that the game will only be available on the PlayStation 5, so those who only have the PlayStation 4 will need to upgrade if they want to play it. It's also important to note that the game is a timed exclusive for the PS5. The exclusivity will end at the end of this year, about six months after the game's release, but even then we shouldn't expect it to immediately be on PC.

Final Fantasy is pretty notorious for never being on the Xbox family of consoles, despite being available on PC. However, that isn't to say that Final Fantasy XVI won't be available on the Xbox Series X at some point in the future.

What is the Story and Gameplay of Final Fantasy XVI?

Final Fantasy XVI tells the tale of Clive Rosfield as he embarks on a journey through three distinct stages of his life: his teenage years, his twenties, and his thirties. Set in the realm of Valisthea, the game takes a departure from the contemporary sci-fi setting of Final Fantasy XV, returning to its medieval fantasy roots, as indicated by the trailers. The advanced technology featured in the previous game has been replaced by a world filled with swords, shields, and mystical crystals, reminiscent of the classic Final Fantasy titles.

Although the colossal mechs and futuristic airships are absent, the action-based real-time battle system, reminiscent of Final Fantasy XV, makes a return. While the exact mechanics have yet to be fully disclosed, the combat showcased in the trailers demonstrates thrilling swordplay combos, aerial assaults, warp-based dashes, and devastating magical attacks.

It has been revealed that Clive possesses the ability to wield the power of the Eikons throughout his journey. These mighty beings grant him their powers to vanquish all who stand in his way. Engaging in battles involving the Eikons will be a crucial aspect of the combat system, allowing players to partake in clashes between these formidable entities, each with its unique combat style.

Iconic summons from the series, including Titan, Phoenix, Ifrit, and Shiva, make an appearance in the trailers, hinting at their availability for players to unleash upon their foes. Similar systems were previously showcased during the June 2022 State of Play gameplay reveal.

Who are the Characters in Final Fantasy XVI?

Players will encounter a diverse cast of characters on their epic journey through the game. So, we went over everything that we know about them! Clive, the firstborn of the Archduke of Rosaria, is a formidable master of the blade. Destined to inherit the Phoenix's flames, his fate takes an unexpected turn when his younger brother, Joshua, becomes the Dominant of the Phoenix instead. However, Clive's exceptional skill and victory in the ducal tournament earn him the prestigious title of the First Shield of Rosaria, entrusted with protecting the Phoenix and gaining a share of its fiery power.

Torgal, discovered alone in a snowfield during one of the Archduke's expeditions, is given to his sons upon his return. After surviving a disaster that nearly ended the Rosfield line of succession, Torgal is reunited with Clive more than a decade later. Now serving him in battle, Torgal showcases his prowess by launching fierce attacks against enemies while also tending to Clive's wounds.

Joshua, the second son of the Archduke, inherits the Phoenix's flames and assumes the role of the Dominant of the Phoenix. Unlike his older brother, Joshua possesses a more cautious and fearful nature. Nevertheless, he treats all subjects of his father's realm with compassion and kindness. As a member of Clive's party, Cidolfus, commonly known as Cid, has a remarkable past. Initially a soldier, he later becomes an outlaw with a noble cause. Cid aspires to establish a sanctuary where persecuted magic casters and awakened Dominants can find solace and choose their own destinies. Awakened as the Dominant of Ramuh, he forms a unique bond with the powerful Eikon.

Jill, born in the Northern Territories, was taken from her home at a young age to become a ward of Rosaria. Acting as a peacekeeper between warring nations, she plays a vital role in securing stability. Although not related by blood to the two brothers, Jill grows up in the Rosfield household and becomes a trusted confidant to Clive and Joshua. Hugo Kupka, formerly a nameless foot soldier in the Republican Army, undergoes a life-altering transformation when he awakens as the Dominant of the Eikon Titan. This newfound power propels him to the forefront of Dhalmekian politics. Now holding the esteemed position of Permanent Economic Advisor, Hugo wields considerable influence over both nations' armies and policy-making processes.

Benedikta, the Dominant of the Eikon Garuda, has a troubled past marked by her coldhearted and ruthless demeanor. Her exceptional talent for deceit and swordplay enables her to command Waloed's elite intelligencers. However, her encounter with Clive during a mission to find the elusive second Eikon of Fire forces her to confront the haunting shadows of her own history. Dion, the crown prince of the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, not only bears the weight of his royal lineage but also leads the renowned order of knights known as the dragoons. Revered and beloved by his troops and people alike, Dion embodies honor and valor. Yet, beneath the surface, turmoil brews within the empire, posing challenges to his rule and threatening the stability he strives to uphold.

Barnabas arrives in Valisthea without a title or land. Through his exceptional swordsmanship, he gradually gains power and establishes his own kingdom. Despite facing a revolution led by local beastmen attempting to usurp his land, Barnabas emerges victorious thanks to his ability to summon the Eikon Odin. With an army that rivals any in the world, he fearlessly rides into battle on his spectral steed.

Will Final Fantasy XVI be Multiplayer?

As of right now, Final Fantasy XVI is a single-player experience. That doesn't mean that at some point it won't have multiplayer aspects to it. When Final Fantasy XV came out, it was a single-player game as well until the release of a multiplayer update called Comrades.
