Alan Wake 2 Developer Shares Brief New Release Update

Alan Wake II is the sequel to Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake, a horror game that follows the narrative journey of author Alan Wake. Since the first game's release, Remedy has created a universe involving other games including Control and Quantum Break. The story follows Alan Wake on a vacation gone wrong in Bright Falls, where he uncovers the plot of a horror novel that he doesn't remember writing come to life. As he discovers more and more manuscripts of this novel, those aspects come to life and attack Alan, forcing him to defend himself with nothing but a flashlight and the batteries he is able to find.

The sequel will finally be released after 13 years of silence, and we couldn't be more excited. So, we decided to take a look into everything we know about the game and consolidate it all in one place!

When Does Alan Wake II Release?

You'll be able to get your hands on Alan Wake ii on October 17 of this year. The game was officially announced at the Game Awards back in 2021, but there wasn't an official date listed then.

What Platforms is Alan Wake II For?

Alan Wake II will only be available for the current generation of consoles, meaning the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. It is important to note that all of the available versions will exclusively be digital only. While this might be disappointing to some, Remedy writer Sam Lake explained that this game the development more time to work on the game and more room to develop the product that they want us all to experience.

Are there Different Editions of Alan Wake II?

Regardless of which edition you preorder, you will be able to get the Ornate Revolver skin for Alan and the Survival Resource pack for Saga. As mentioned above, you have the remember that the game will only be available digitally.

There will also be a Deluxe Edition available that will include an expansion pass of two DLC, a Celebrity Suit for Alan, a Crimson Windbreaker for Saga, a Lantern Charm for Saga, and a Parliament Shotgun Skin for Alan. With respect to the PC version of the game, it will only be available on the Epic Games store.

What are the Story and Gameplay of Alan Wake II?

Players will have the opportunity to step into the shoes of either Alan Wake or Saga Anderson, each with their own unique single-player storylines. The game's structure allows players to choose the order in which they play these narratives, with the exception of the opening and closing sequences, which are reserved for Saga and Alan, respectively.

The gameplay of Alan Wake II involves navigating various environments and combating enemies using an array of firearms and a flashlight. The flashlight serves a dual purpose - not only does it illuminate the dark and eerie surroundings, but it can also be "focused" to make enemies vulnerable to attacks. However, this focusing action drains the flashlight's battery, adding a strategic element to the game as players must judiciously use their limited supply of batteries and ammunition to survive. When enemies get too close for comfort, Alan or Saga can execute a dodge maneuver to evade them.

Adding a layer of intrigue to the game, Alan Wake II introduces detective elements. When playing as Saga, players can pause the action to access a safe zone known as the "Mind Place". This unique feature, described by the game's developer, Remedy, as a "3D menu", serves as a visual representation of Saga's thoughts. Within the Mind Place, players can manage a pin board, connecting clues to unravel the central mystery and profiling characters to gather additional clues.

Fans of the original game will be pleased to see the return of manuscript pages. These pages, scattered throughout the game, provide foreshadowing of upcoming events in the story, adding an extra layer of suspense. A new feature in Alan Wake II is the dialogue tree system, which promises to add depth to character interactions and story progression.

Who are the Characters in Alan Wake II?

Alan Wake II is set 13 years after the events of the first game, mirroring the real-world gap between the release dates of the two titles. In this new chapter, the eponymous writer Alan Wake, trapped within a twisted alternate dimension, attempts to escape by writing a horror story about FBI agent Saga Anderson. The alternate dimension has the power to blur the lines between fiction and reality, absorbing those in the real world into its nightmarish realm.

As the story unfolds, strange ritualistic murders begin to occur in Bright Falls, the quiet town where the original game took place. This draws the attention of Saga Anderson, an FBI agent known for her resourcefulness and intelligence. Saga's reputation precedes her as a top-notch agent capable of cracking tough cases, a skill set that will undoubtedly prove useful in the game.

Saga's last name, Anderson, is shared with two significant characters from the original Alan Wake game, the brothers of a former rock band called 'Old Gods of Asgard'. Whether this indicates a blood relation or a distorted connection created by Wake within the Nightmare dimension is yet to be revealed.

Interestingly, this may not be Saga Anderson's first appearance in the gaming world. In Remedy's action thriller Quantum Break, an Easter egg shows Saga investigating the events of Alan Wake alongside fellow FBI agent Alex Casey, who also appears in Alan Wake II. Given Remedy's recent trend of connecting its games within a shared universe, it's possible that the seeds of Saga's character were planted in Quantum Break.

The name 'Saga' also carries significance within the context of the game's themes. Alan Wake frequently delved into Norse mythology, where the word Saga means 'seer,' or someone able to see and communicate with the dead. Given the supernatural elements present in the franchise, it's plausible that Saga may possess abilities beyond the ordinary.

Alan Wake, the titular protagonist of the Alan Wake franchise, is a bestselling American novelist who finds himself embroiled in a series of supernatural events in the quiet town of Bright Falls. His journey continues in the sequel, Alan Wake II, where he remains trapped in a nightmarish alternate dimension known as the Dark Place.

Alan's story begins when he and his wife Alice take a vacation to Bright Falls to overcome his two-year-long writer's block. However, their trip takes a dark turn when Alice is kidnapped by an unseen force, and Alan is forced to fight his way through possessed townsfolk while experiencing the events of a story he doesn't remember writing.

Alan is known for his complex personality, which ranges from melancholy and pensive to aggressive and angry. Despite his sometimes abrasive demeanor, he deeply cares for Alice and is willing to sacrifice anything to save her. His love for Alice and his determination to rescue her from the clutches of the Dark Presence are the driving forces behind his actions throughout the series.
