Resident Evil Village: Maiden Demo First Impressions

Atmospheric And Fun!
by Oliver VanDervoort on February 03, 2021

On the heels of the hit horror game that was Resident Evil 7, Capcom shed a ton of new light on Resident Evil: Village, otherwise known as Resident Evil 8, last week. While showing a new gameplay video and announcing the release date, the game's devs also gave fans of the long-running series a special treat. A new demo, meant to give users a taste of what the upcoming title is going to offer.

There is one caveat when it comes to the demo. This isn't a situation where people are really going to see what's in the upcoming game. Instead, it's a way to introduce players to the atmosphere and look of Village. According to Capcom, Maiden is a stand-alone adventure, though it's clear a couple of characters I met along the way will be in the parent game.

Once the demo was released exclusively on the PS5, I knew I had to give it a go. I've not always been a Resident Evil fan. However, the RE2 remake and the aforementioned Resident Evil 7 before that won me over to the franchise. A game that features vampires, werewolves, and zombies is a game I'm more than a little excited to play. That it will come with the first-person experience of RE7 is only another selling point. So I dove in. I wasn't disappointed.

It should come as no surprise that the PS5 allowed this demo to look just a little bit better than RE7, which is quite an accomplishment. Starting off the "game" in a jail cell and a note giving me instructions on how to get out, I was on the edge of my seat early on.

Having said that, the beginning of the demo is a slow burn. Once out of the cell, there's a lot of walking around, looking for tools to further my journey and complete my goal to get out of the dungeon altogether.

While it seemed like I was alone at first, things got spookier and spookier the further I walked. Sounds behind me and around started to get a bit louder and a bit more obviously inhuman. Several times, I jumped. And I'm not someone who tends to jump when playing a video game.

Eventually, I realized the dungeon was just the beginning. Having found my way out, climbed out into a rather grand mansion, thinking I was home free, I soon realized there were more puzzles to solve in order to truly "get free."

In the mansion, the demo really showed off what Resident Evil Village apparently has to offer. There was a feeling of something being right around the corner at all times. The graphics were realistic and in-depth. The footsteps on the wooden floor, the crackling of the fire, and even the popping of the logs in that fire when they get too hot.

It was also here where the game showed off the visual upgrades over RE7, which is an excellent looking game in its own right. Towards the end of the demo, when I was being chased by what can only be described as the scariest vampire woman I've ever seen, I felt like I was actually running for my life. This demo does a fantastic job of putting the player in the protagonist's shoes. Even if you have no idea who he or she is.

This demo is clearly meant to build anticipation for Resident Evil Village when all is said and done. On that score, Maiden absolutely hit the mark.
