5 Reasons to Be Excited for Resident Evil 4 VR

As usual, Capcom's sound design is a powerful asset

Resident Evil has been one of the most storied franchises in gaming and until recently we’ve only been able to experience it on flat screens. Yes, Resident Evil 7 was a huge hit in VR, but that game didn’t fully let you experience VR as it should, and you were limited to a controller. That all changes with Resident Evil 4 coming to Oculus Quest 2, so here are 5 things to be excited about.

5. The Open World

Resident Evil 4 doesn’t get enough credit with pioneering part of the open-world craze but it should. The lack of loading screens in the game created some amazingly tense moments as you scrambled into houses searching for ammo as a chainsaw-wielding villager came to end you and all that and more is going to right in your headset. It’s a recipe for gaming magic.

4. The Monstrous Fights

I’m not going to spoil anything but there are some extremely large bosses in Resident Evil 4 that were terrifying on the flat screen. Now, that’s all coming to VR and along with that, the consistent threat of the villagers becomes all the more horrifying when it's happening in front of your very eyes.

3. Full VR Immersion

It’s pretty tough to make a game work in VR and it’s even tougher when that game originally was a third-person shooter. Resident Evil 4 seems to have pulled it off though and you’ll be manually reloading, aiming, and fighting in melee combat in full VR. There seems to have been no punches pulled here, so expect a full-fledged VR experience. That means if you want to shoot your way out of trouble, go for it. Rather go for a melee strategy and conserve ammo? That’s cool too.

2. It’s a full game

This shouldn’t be a point of emphasis, but sadly, 5 years into VR, we still have a disturbing lack of full games. Now, nobody is calling Resident Evil 4 a long experience, but it is at least a full experience with a story and unfortunately, that’s hard to find in the VR world. There are very few triple-A feeling VR titles and when they do come along, they have been pretty polarizing. Hopefully, Resident Evil 4 VR will be the system seller that Oculus Quest 2 needs.

1. Audio

One of the biggest weapons in Capcom’s arsenal throughout the years is their sound design. Whether it's with music, ambient music, or jump scare sound effects, Resident Evil has been a masterful series when it comes to creating tension before delivering a fright. Take that mastery and put it into a headset with those creepy sounds right in your ears and some of the best sound design in the series from Resident Evil 4 backing your every move. Scared yet? Good, because VR is all about immersion and there are few series that know how to grip you in a moment like Resident evil.
