Skyrim Anniversary Edition Risks Damaging Mod Community

Skyrim Anniversary Edition is going to problematic for those who use mods.
by Adam Braunstein on October 15, 2021

Skyrim Anniversary Edition

Skyrim is one of those games that seems to never go away. Despite being 10 years old, it is still one of the most recognizable and popular names in not only the minds of gamers but on the steam charts as well. This got resurrected with the incredible Skyrim VR for PC and PS4 and the reason that these communities have lasted as long as they have is due to the modder community. The modding community is what keeps Skyrim relevant today as they have outright fixed and improved the game in so many ways that they should really have been paid as much as the original creators.

Now, Skyrim's Anniversary Edition is coming out and with it comes a great threat to the modding community. See, instead of launching as a new game for people who already own Skyrim, it will act as an update to the current version of the game that you have. See, for modders, there is a program called SKSE that is nearly essential for every mod to run and it relies on a certain version of the game, specifically Skyrim Special Edition now which hasn't been changed for 3+ years.

With the update, this throws this program into total chaos and modders will have to get to work on making it compatible with the Skyrim Anniversary Edition update. Considering these people are not paid for their work, they will have little reason to want to return to the game to fix it yet again, so many players might be left without their favorite mods working how they remember.

With all of the plugins that have to connect with each other in order to make the mods work flawlessly, it's being recommended that anyone using mods that require SKSS to back up the executables on the game and disable any updates before the game launches on November 11th.
