GTA: The Trilogy gets a November Release Date and Game Trailer

How will the remastered trilogy feel?
by Adam Braunstein on October 25, 2021

Grand theft auto trilogy

Grand Theft Auto is one of the most important names in video game history. Not only did it introduce the open world concept to gaming in a lot of ways, but it also gave gamers one of the most accessible and over the top displays of realistic violence we've ever seen. In case you aren't old enough to remember, Grand Theft Auto 3 was the iconic title in this franchise and when this game hit stores, not only did it sell through the roof, but it had every governor and mother of the world clutching their pearls at the gameplay available to us. Of course, this in turn made people want to play the game more and this lead to one of gaming's greatest empires. What was overshadowed in the controversy over the game though was the intrigue of a story right out of a Scorcese movie and some genuinely great characters and writing. This combined with a fully explorable and fictionalized version of New York City created one of the best games of all time.

Since then, the series has matured in many ways, gaining a grittier and more serious tone and the progression from the Grand Theft Auto 3 to Grand Theft Auto 5 has been a wild thing to witness. The numbered titles are one thing though, and despite not having a number title to go with it, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are two of the most beloved games in the franchise for having two of the most amazing open world's in game to date mixed with great stories that offer very different points of views from the mafia culture to gang life in a fictionalized California.

Knowing this, Rockstar has decided to remaster these three gaming classics and release them in a package called GTA: The Trilogy. Now, this obviously comes with a bit of good and bit of bad as well. The good? You're getting 3 large games for the price of one and if you've never played them before, this will likely be the representative edition for them. The bad is that these are games nearly two decades old and with that is going to come with some caveats.

First off, it's been well documented how ancient Rockstar's gameplay design is even when talking about their masterworks like Red Dead Redemption 2. Set those gameplay mechanics even further back in time and you're going to be left with a game that might not have aged that well. While it is a remaster, Rockstar has said there will be plenty of updates. What these are is a bit of a mystery, but the hope is that things like lock-on aiming have been thrown to the wayside for a more modern shooting mechanic. The other thing to keep in mind here is that the new graphics while obviously better, seem so have lost a little bit of personality that the old games had.

While nobody is giving graphics awards to the character models in Grand Theft Auto 3, they had this semi-realistic grittiness to them that was charming. Now? The characters all look like they could have jumped out of Fortnite and to me, that kind of gets rid of the magic look that the original games once had. Final Fantasy 8's remake suffered this same fate and upgrading to a more comic book-like look was a strange decision here.

Regardless, we will find out how the new look and feel fairs on November 11th, 2021.
