Returnal Update Finally Adds Save System

Returnal: a test of time and willpower in an unforgiving roguelike adventure
by Adam Braunstein on October 27, 2021

Returnal Save System

Returnal is one of those games that you really just need to play to understand the appeal. At a distance, it just seems like a pretty next-gen shooter. The massive appeal of the game comes from the multiple run-throughs that you can have. As a roguelike, this is generally how things are done so that you can get a different experience each time you play through the game. The problem has always been the inability to save midgame. This usually has never been too much of an issue though because most roguelike games can be finished in one sitting. With Returnal, that just isn't the case, and unless you want to spend an entire day trying to beat the game. The idea is that with each playthrough, you unlock more and more of the story so that when you finally reach the conclusion, it all makes sense. While the story is pretty convoluted and even the multiple endings are up for interpretation, one thing remains clear. People just do not have the time to put this much effort into a single playthrough of a game.

A huge theme in the gaming world these days is how developers will respect a player's time. Many games will offer shorter missions, more forgiving gameplay, and other helpful things to make sure that a gamer never feels like they are wasting their time. Returnal was not interested in such frivolities and basically said we're going to destroy your will to play and you're going to love it. Now, this approach has worked in the past with games like Darkest Dungeon being the best example recently, but the difference is that Returnal's playthroughs are really lengthy and unless you really put in some time, you aren't going to feel like you've accomplished anything considering everything including weapons is reset upon your inevitable death.

Thankfully, Housemarque has mercifully granted us what we've been asking for and has added a save system to the game. It's not your typical save system though as there are some caveats. First off, no saving during heavy combat scenarios so don't think about save cheating your way through the game's various bosses. The other thing that makes it unique is that the save will disappear the second you return back to the game. That means that once you load it up, it's gone for good and if you die before creating another one, well back to the beginning you go. If you die after you've created the save, you still will return to the beginning because the save is really only there so that you can log off and have a human life amidst trying to beat Returnal. It's a bit of a shoddy solution if you ask me, but at least its something and it will make playing Returnal a far more enjoyable experience because of it.
