How to Save in Darkest Dungeon 2

How saving works in Darkest Dungeon 2: Road to Ruin
by Adam Braunstein on November 01, 2021

Darkest Dungeon 2

Darkest Dungeon 2 is in Early Access form on the Epic Games Store now and it's already being hailed as a very worthy successor to the epic breakout hit from 2015, Darkest Dungeon. For those who haven't delved into the depths just yet, Darkest Dungeon is a one-of-a-kind RPG that has you gather a team together to take down the darkness and save your village. It involves managing stress, sanity, sickness, and more as your light dims in the dungeons and you face down the most terrifying 2D enemies ever conceived. The sequel carries that out in a big way as the adventure now hits the road in a carriage as you journey to stop the oncoming apocalypse. When it comes to a game so difficult, saving is always at the forefront of players' minds. Here's how to save in Darkest Dungeon 2.

How to Save in Darkest Dungeon 2

Saving is a premium when it comes to Darkest Dungeon. Now with that being said, that doesn't mean that the game is just going to accommodate you. That's not how things work in Darkest Dungeon 2 and when you screw up and make a mistake, that mistake is permanent. However, you can save your game when you exit the game. This means that while you can't go back and do things differently as only one save state is allowed at one time, you can at least have your progress saved at all times, for better or worse.

Darkest Dungeon 2 works a little bit differently than Darkest Dungeon as you will be committing your whole game to one set of heroes each run you have. For example, if you start out with a team of four, and they all die, it's back to the beginning of the game to try another randomized run out with a new team. This gives you the chance to bond more with your team and witness more and more character interactions that will be a help or detriment depending on how things go during your run. This helps negate the need to manually save the game as each new run is a new opportunity to build a team.

This game is tough as nails and although things are a bit easier at times with the sequel because the management is on a smaller scale, the unforgiving nature of the first game pervades throughout the sequel as usual. Darkest Dungeon 2 is available now on the Epic Store in Early Access.
