Battlefield 2042 Among Steam's Lowest-Rated Games

Battlefield 2042 is being played by a lot of people - and hated
by Adam Braunstein on November 24, 2021

Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 was one of the most hyped games coming into this holiday season, but since its launch last week, it has endured some of the worst bashing any game has ever experienced. Along with technical issues, some players have reported the game barely even working, not working with a controller, numerous issues with graphics, frame rate drops, and more, it also has the dubious award now of being the 9th worst-reviewed game of all time on Steam. With 42,000 reviews, 30,000 of them have been negative. That is tough to pull off, especially at a time where games are at a premium and this fall has been far lighter on the triple-A titles than usual, so a lot was riding on Battlefield 2042's success. Despite that though, the game has maintained a huge player base throughout its first week, so its clear that there is at least something there to keep bringing people back to it.

The main complaint is that users have claimed that Battlefield 2042 has removed so many of the features that are normally in Battlefield games for the past decade. Some of the things reported are Persistent Lobbies, no global leader boards, no standard server browser, fewer standard modes like team deathmatch, fewer vehicles, no transport vehicles like bikes or ATV's, fewer guns, too many mobility options, technical issues, aim assist issues, and terrible in-game communication options. This unfortunately was a list of things that were all present when the beta of the game was released last month and still, nothing has been done to fix it. While this could very well be the developer's vision, what is the point of a vision that nobody is satisfied with? The less is more approach rarely ever works and almost never does in games that come out yearly. It's clear that this was a time crunch on a game that just plain was not ready to be released.

There are some saving graces here though as the Portal mode has been heavily praised as a way to experience content from past games and user-created maps. The problem though is that the developers at DICE seemed to lean on this too heavily and it seems more like an excuse for them to do less work rather than an innovative map. DICE is planning a big multi-part update in the next 30 days though, so it is possible that players will be rewarded for not refunding the game and might actually get the fully functioning product they paid full price for.
