A Breakdown of 505 Games’ First-Ever Showcase Event

3 new games and an update on Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising were all featured in today’s showcase event
by Joe Wilcock on May 17, 2022

Terraria, Dead by Daylight, Control and Death Stranding (PC) publisher, 505 Games, held its premiere showcase event today. The Italian firm announced 3 new games and provided a glimpse of Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising, which was released on May 10th.

Among The Trolls

First up was Among The Trolls: “a first-person, survival, action-adventure game” by indie developers, Forbidden Studios. According to GamerBraves, Forbidden Studios is a team comprised of developers who had previously worked on “Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Vampire: The Masquerade”. Veli Kokkonen, their founder, was also one of the original designers of the Unity Engine. Quite the pedigree for a small indie team!

505 Games’ website provides an idea of what is in store in Among The Trolls:

“Among the Trolls is a first-person, survival, action-adventure game where the strange mysteries of Finnish forests are unraveled.

You play as either Alex or Anna, who travelled from the U.S. to Finland to visit their grandparents, living in an isolated cabin located among the towering trees. When you find that the cabin has been abandoned and your grandparents have vanished, you are pulled into a world of Nordic mythology and memories of childhood summers spent with your loved ones.

Embark on a quest to find your missing grandparents and learn how to survive in the wilderness, dealing with the supernatural creatures of Finnish mythology and the animistic nature of the world. Follow in your grandfather’s footsteps and discover the rune-singer within.

Break free from society and get lost in the woods — among the trolls.”

Speaking to GamerBraves, Forbidden Studios disclosed much more information about the game and the mechanics featured within. They started by providing some context on the titular Trolls:

“The whole thing about Among the Trolls is that the world itself belongs to the trolls and the other folk of the forests, and even partially consists of them.

In the ancient Nordic animistic worldview, all of these are just part of the world and part of the environment, but the trolls themselves work like NPC characters: they’re part of the storyline, and they’re not enemies per se for the player, but something that the player ends up helping, be helped by them, or the player is working together with them to solve certain mysteries of the world itself. So we wanted to take a stake in having the trolls not just being the enemies, as happens often in many games, but instead, they are part of the world itself.”

They then continued to explain how the crafting system will function:

“With the crafting system, we are going quite similar to another kind of survival games, but we’ve been looking more into the ancient crafts, and taking inspiration on how certain things are done in the real world. For example, how you boil or dry distillate glue: making that as close as – while being fun to play – how you would make glue in the real-life as well, but making that part of the whole crafting system.

And with the building system… Well, a year ago, Valheim came out, we loved that Viking vibe, we loved building things in the forest, and we really loved the building system, so we took a little bit of inspiration out of that, and how to make the building “fun”. So it shouldn’t take too much time, and you should be able to build structures with your friends, and it’s pretty much this approach to “blueprint-based” building, where one of the players can become the architect that designs how the things are going around and how they are placed, while the other players can get the resources and actually build the structures.”

As the game is steeped in Finnish Mythology, Forbidden Studios expanded on how this will play out in the game:

“The player character must proffer offerings, consult the spirits, and make sacrifices to them to keep the woods and the folk of the forest happy.

“On top of the regular character attributes that you’d expect to find in a regular survival game the player will be introduced to Väki, Lykky, and Sisu. With the mystical power of Väki, the player can practice the ancient art of singing spell poems: for example, to conjure rain or summon the northern lights to illuminate pitch-black winter nights. Lykky is a Finnish version of luck that affects the chance of success in most endeavors and reflects the character’s standing in the eyes of nature. Do not anger the forest! Sisu is a supernatural form of resilience with which you might be able to push through when all else fails.”

They also give mention to the inclusion of Co-op multiplayer:

“Among the Trolls supports co-op multiplayer with up to four players, and the whole story mode is included there, so you can play the story with your friends the same way as you would with the single-player version of the game. In addition to that, we will – during the early access – test and develop different kinds of survival modes as well, and different challenges.”

Among The Trolls will be split into four chapters, all releasing 2 months apart from each other with the first being made available for early access on Steam sometime in 2022.

Stray Blade

Next, Stray Blade was announced. An action RPG that exhibited beautiful graphics, an interesting world and deep, RPG mechanics. Its description is as such:

"Prove yourself in this action RPG and master intense combat while exploring the ancient ruins of a mysterious civilization. Legends tell of Acrea the Lost Valley, a wild and overgrown place but unmistakably powerful. You found this forgotten land yet died. Time passes, and miraculously you are brought back to life. Point Blank Games, the team behind Shock Tactics, will be developing this one but little is known outside of the trailer that was shown. It appears to be much earlier in development than Among The Trolls but the footage was enough to get fans excited nevertheless.

Miasma Chronicles

The last new game to be showcased was Miasma Chronicles, developed by Bearded Ladies, the minds behind Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. Again, details on this are scarce other than the fact that it's a tactical RPG game set in the post-apocalypse. The trailer, as well as the synopsis on 505 Games' website, sheds more light on the upcoming title:

"In the not-too-distant future. America has been torn apart by a savage force known only as the ‘Miasma’.

Meet Elvis, a young man brought to the mining town of Sedentary as a baby. Left by his mother in the care of a robotic older ‘brother’ and given a mysterious glove with which he can control the Miasma.

Join the brothers on a quest across a post-apocalyptic wasteland to find the answers they crave. Answers which may change the course of human history forever.

From the creators of Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, comes a beautifully crafted tactical adventure you won’t forget"

Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising

Finally, Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising was shown off and this served as little more than an update and a reminder that the game exists. Another action RPG, Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising performed amicably amongst critics and rounds off a surprisingly exciting showcase for 505 Games.
