Cory Barlog Gives Update on God of War: Ragnarök

4 years to the day after the release of the reboot.
by Joe Wilcock on April 20, 2022

Kratos and Atreus in a cave in God of War: Ragnarök

Creative Director, Cory Barlog, has provided an update ahead of God of War Ragnarök release, which should drop later this year. An injury to Kratos’ voice actor, Christopher Judge, has delayed the eagerly anticipated sequel by a year but Barlog assures fans that the team has its “heads-down, hard at work”.

Here’s what he had to say:

"We haven't said a lot about this. That's because everybody is heads-down, hard at work. We are perfectionists. Everyone is tightening up the graphics...there is so much going on right now that I just wish we could share with you. But it's just not ready to be shown. I guarantee you the moment--the very second--that we have something we're ready to share, we're going to share it with you. We don't want to hold any of this back. So please, hold tight--know that something cool is coming and that we--everybody here at Sony Santa Monica--is so incredibly thankful for all the support you've given us."

Cory Barlog, Creative Director

Having directed the 2018 reboot, Barlog has elected to take a step back allowing Eric Williams to direct Ragnarök. Barlog’s personal triumphs were well documented in Sony’s documentary Raising Kratos, as were the risks associated with the project. He essentially canned a new IP that Santa Monica was working on to spearhead a new God of War project and a Norse narrative, of which Ragnarök will wrap up as they gear towards a potential Egyptian theme going forward.

The risk was well worth it, not only selling more than 19.5 million copies but also garnering multiple game of the year awards and leaving a legacy of arguably the best game on the PlayStation 4. It was also released on steam in January and has sold more than a million copies there too.

God of War Ragnarök is yet to receive an official release date, all we know is that it will release this year. It will face stiff competition, much like 2018, to be considered as game of the year again so they have their work cut out. 4 years ago, it had to battle with Red Dead Redemption 2, Spider-Man, Assassins Creed Odyssey and Super Smash Bros. This year, it will be competing with Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West which have already been released as well as Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy which are also due to release this year.

All we have to go on, for now, is the 2021 reveal trailer showcasing a healthy dose of gameplay to tantalise fans. But, with an already established engine, we can anticipate another legendary entry into the iconic franchise with Ragnarök marking the 6th game in the mainline series and 9th altogether. As far as video games go, this is poised to be another top Tyr... title.
