Starfield’s Main Story “20%” Bigger Than Previous Titles

Todd Howard claims it could be up to 40 hours long
by Joe Wilcock on June 15, 2022

Bethesda RPGs are renowned for their epic scope and length. The hours of content featured within both the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series are colossal and it appears as though Starfield will be no different, if not more so.

Speaking to IGN, Todd Howard revealed that the main quest in Starfield will be approximately 20% larger than what has previously been seen. If this is to be believed, it would take players around 30-40 hours to complete the game.

"This one’s ending up a little bit longer [than our previous games] and we may tune that some still. It’s more quests, so it might be 20% more than our previous ones."

- Bethesda Director and Executive Producer, Todd Howard

When compared to Bethesda’s previous RPGs, the larger main quest could make Starfield one of their longest games to date.

According to HowLongToBeat.com, the time to complete all of Bethesda’s main quest lines is as follows:

  • The Elder Scrolls: Arena - 22 hours
  • The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall - 32.5 hours
  • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind- 44.5 hours
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - 27.5 hours
  • Fallout 3 - 22.5 hours
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - 25.5 hours
  • Fallout 4 - 27 hours

Todd Howard is, of course, aware that the main quest only serves as a backbone to the experience. The game itself can live on for many years through updates and, as Howard mentions, mods:

“We’ve learned that people do play our games for a really, really long time.

They’re still playing Skyrim – not straight for 10 years, but they leave it and they come back and there’s extra content. Certainly we’re going to be doing extra content for this game, and we love our modding community. We actually think this game, for our modding community, is going to be a dream as there’s so much they could do.”

Starfield is set to launch in early 2023 on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
