Overwatch 2 Ditches Loot Boxes

Instead, Blizzard opt for a battle passĀ
by Joe Wilcock on June 17, 2022

Overwatch is synonymous with loot boxes, having virtually pioneered the system in the modern era. It played an integral part in the first game, gifting players cosmetic items in exchange for in-game currency. As the sequel shifts gears to a free-to-play model, Blizzard revealed in a recent live stream that they will look to introduce a battle-pass mechanic in favour of loot boxes.

“Along with the free-to-play change we're doing away with loot boxes entirely. We have a new battle pass model coming in, and we have a store as well, so players have a lot more control over how they interact with the game and acquire new content."

- Lead hero designer, Geoff Goodman

Following in the footsteps of other free-to-play titles such as Warzone, Fortnite and Apex Legends, Overwatch 2 will bank on making its money through battle pass subscriptions and in-store purchases.

Battle-Passes are, for the most part, much more user-friendly than loot boxes as it eliminates the randomness and mystery of the prizes. Players can scout out the unlocks in later levels and decide whether or not they would like to subscribe, as opposed to sinking money into random drops.

However, Overwatch would award players with a loot box for levelling up which gave them a chance to secure coveted cosmetic items for free. It remains to be seen how easily these items can be obtained without a subscription to the battle pass.

Overwatch 2 will launch its beta on June 28th before its early access release on October 4th.

The beta will be available for PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. Registration for it has already launched, for more information see the website.
