FIFA 23, Need for Speed and Skate 4 Could Be Unveiled by EA Next Month

July is set to be a busy month for EA
by Joe Wilcock on June 27, 2022

Despite having several games in development, EA cancelled their annual virtual event, EA Play, leaving their titles without a platform to express themselves. Between Star Wars, Dead Space and Dragon Age, just to name a few, EA seemed to have enough in their locker to put on a meaty presentation. Despite this, they have opted to incrementally reveal their projects separately. The Dead Space Remake and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor have both received such reveals, as has Madden 23 and according to reports, the announcements don’t stop there.

As told by Exputer, it is believed that EA will reveal FIFA, the new Need for Speed and the long-awaited Skate 4 next month:

FIFA

FIFA 23 will draw the curtains on a 30-year collaboration between EA Sports and FIFA. EA will continue the franchise under their new brand, EA Sports FC, after losing the naming rights over a financial disagreement.

“We’re thankful for our many years of great partnership with FIFA. The future of global football is very bright, and fandom around the world has never been stronger.

We have an incredible opportunity to put EA SPORTS FC at the heart of the sport, and to bring even more innovative and authentic experiences to the growing football audience.”

- Andrew Wilson, EA CEO

EA will still retain the licenses for 19,000 athletes, 700 teams, 100 stadiums and over 30 leagues so no credibility will be lost over authenticity. However, the brand of FIFA still brings significance and clout. After all, the partnership made FIFA the best-selling sports franchise ever, according to The Guinness World Records, selling over 325 million copies as of 2021. Time will tell if the franchise can stand on its own two feet.

As for FIFA 23 itself, details have been scarce so far. Fans can hope that the recent cross-play tests in FIFA 22 point towards fully-featured cross-play capability in the next iteration, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Need for Speed

After a 3 year hiatus, Need for Speed is back and is set to receive its 24th entry in the franchise. Criterion, known for Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted, is currently developing the upcoming racer as it targets a Q4 2022 release.

“I wanted to let you all know how excited our team here in Guildford is to be back in the driver’s seat of development for Need for Speed. As you'll know we have real history with racing and with Need for Speed.

We're focused on bringing Criterion's unique point of view, unparalleled game feel, and high-quality innovations that will chart a new future for this wonderful series of games.”

- Matt Webster, Criterion Games General Manager

The new Need for Speed is reportedly set in Lake Shore City, a fictional location with scale unlike anything seen in a Need for Speed before. A leaked screenshot surfaced recently depicting the new map, which is supposedly a fictionalised version of Chicago.

Sources also suggest that the Need for Speed will take on a more stylised aesthetic. Industry insider, Jeff Grub, described the style as such:

“It’s going to be photo-realistic, but it’s going to have on top of that, anime elements. You know when you see a car commercial or something like that and the car’s driving around, but then cartoons flames and stuff are flying off it? That’s the kind of the aesthetic that they seem to be going for.”

- Jeff Grub, VentureBeat

The new Need for Speed is believed to be a current-generation only title which will as mentioned, release later next year.

Skate 4

Speculation has orbited this project for the best part of a decade now, but it could be first in line to receive a full reveal next month. Pre-Alpha footage has already leaked and there are rumours that the 4th entry could feature an open world.

What we do know is that Skate 4 will have a major focus on user-created content as part of their modern generation skateboarding title:

“While skateboarding in and of itself has tremendous appeal to a huge, global audience, there’s also another secular trend that’s happening inside our industry around user-generated content, open-world, and interaction.

For many people, skateboarding isn’t just a sport: it unlocks their access to art, culture…

So for many people, you think about skating as a starting point that has appeal, but you start to build in user-generated content, exploration, and community on top of that, and that expands the opportunity exponentially. So as we think about our future and we think about growth, a big part of it is choosing games that not only themselves have appeal, but can benefit from secular trends in our communities that we think will grow them even beyond our initial expectations”.

- Andrew Wilson, EA CEO

Skate 4 is expected to release sometime soon, according to Andrew Wilson, but nothing is set in stone yet. We do know that it will definitely be released on PC but we’re still in the dark on what consoles it will appear on.
