The Joker and Batman Will Be Sidelined in Gotham Knights

Says Patrick Redding, but we have been led astray beforeĀ
by Joe Wilcock on July 26, 2022

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con has been a certified bonanza of gaming and movie announcements. Marvel’s panel in particular has made waves, unveiling the next two phases in their cinematic universe, culminating with Avengers Secret Wars and Avengers The Kang Dynasty. On the flip side, representing the DC contingent and hidden amongst the chaos was a small update from WB Games Montréal creative director Patrick Redding regarding Gotham Knights

Promotional material for Gotham Knights has already made it abundantly clear that Batman is dead in this universe, in fact, it’s the entire set-up for the game. But, Redding has reiterated that he is “really dead”, squashing any conjecture about him returning or serving as a third-act plot twist. The omission of the clown prince of crime was also confirmed in the same Q&A. So, there will be no Batman or Joker in Gotham Knights if Redding is to be believed, but there are plenty more characters in Batman's pantheon of villains and foes to consider.

Harley Quinn’s inclusion, for example, has been left deliberately ambiguous with Redding stating he “will not confirm or deny” if she’s in the game. As for the Riddler, it has been confirmed that he will have “exactly one” puzzle for you to crack. So, without the regulars, who’s in Gotham Knights?

First and foremost we have our four main protagonists; Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood, all of which have been playable characters before. Players will team up and play as two out of the four heroes to take on the game's main adversaries, The Court of Owls. Mr Freeze and The Penguin will also make an appearance, as confirmed by the trailer. And last but not least, Alfred Pennyworth will presumably oversee and mentor our fledgling heroes.

Gotham Knights will release on October 25th, 2022 and will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. PS4 and Xbox One versions were being developed but have since been scrapped so that they can “provide players with the best possible gameplay experience.”
