Battlefield 2042 To Reintroduce Class System In Season 3 Update

Hopefully this update will bring us a step closer to where things should have been at launch.

With Battlefield 2042 dropping the Season 2 update at the end of August 2022, the big news isn’t what’s in Season 2, but rather what is planned for Season 3.

The DICE devs have been listening to the community as the feedback has been negative from dedicated Battlefield fans. Just before Season 2 dropped, a development update video was dropped to share DICE’s vision for future updates. In the video, there was talk of new maps, map reworks, and the decision to reintroduce a class system.

Now all Battlefield veterans know that the class system was a key part of getting squads to work together. In past Battlefield games, a spawning squadmate could easily see what class another squad member was and could then determine if they would support, protect, or assist them by selecting the appropriate class. This mechanic promoted squads cooperating and working together even if they didn’t use voice chat with each other.

Initially, BF2042 placed their balance and customization in the use of ‘Specialists’ which are similar to Call of Duty’s use of operators. In BF2042, however, each Specialist has a dedicated gadget they can use that others cannot. There are healing dart guns, wingsuits, riot shields, hacking pads, stationary shields, missile launchers, sentry guns, scanners, recon drones, and grappling hooks. These gadgets will remain specialist specific. The ‘universal’ gadgets will not.

As it stands, the gadgets are med crates, supply crates, mines, repair tools, anti aircraft missiles, laser acquisition marker (SOFLAM), nav beacon, anti-armor missile, various grenades, C5, and the proximity sensor. Currently, BF2042 allows ANY specialist to build different gear loadouts to use ANY of these gadgets. Going forward in Season 3, each of the specialists will be grouped into one of the classes (assault, support, recon, medic) and the gadgets will as well. At that point, only certain specialists will be able to use certain gadgets. For example, only recon specialists will be able to use the proximity sensor and the nav beacon gadgets.

Battlefield 2042 continues to chug along with new seasons and updates. While the players haven’t returned in force, there has been a slight renewed interest in the disappointing first person shooter. While it is clear that DICE is determined to breathe life back into this newest iteration of Battlefield, it is clear that the community of core Battlefield fans are still disappointed with what exists.

Season 3 content seems to be planned for release after November 2022.
