Call of Duty Franchise to Last 'Several More Years' on PlayStation

Microsoft's CEO promises continued access on PS

There are plenty of conversations revolving around the latest acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft last year but none seemed to focus on one particular question that all gamers have in mind: will beloved games become exclusive to the Xbox family of systems? Specifically, will Call of Duty, a franchise owned by Activision and now Microsoft, be exclusive to the Xbox? Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft gaming, spoke with The Verge to discuss the future of the franchise.

"In January we provided a signed agreement to Sony to guarantee Call of Duty on PlayStation, with feature and content parity, for at least several more years beyond the current Sony contract, an offer that goes well beyond typical gaming industry agreements."

This adds a breath of relief for players as back in February, the idea was only to make the franchise available, "beyond the existing agreement and into the future," with no real understanding of what that means. Even now, there has been no clear window as to when Microsoft thinks that such a large franchise will leave the hands of millions of players worldwide. One thing we do know is that Microsoft will be putting the Call of Duty games as well as Blizzard titles such as Diablo and Overwatch on Game Pass once the acquisition has officially gone through.
