EA Outlines the Future of Battlefield

What's coming next for the first-person shooter series?
by Natalie Collazo on September 08, 2022

Battlefield 2042's improved scoreboard delayed to March - Polygon

A new Battlefield studio has been created to help work on the future of the series including a new project with a more narrative-driven campaign. This studio, Ridgeline Games, is headed by Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto. Considering this, it seems that a narrative title with him at the helm would be the best idea. The latest Battlefield installment, 2042, has been regarded as one of the most disappointing user experiences in video games. The launch was met with poor reviews, the live service itself wasn't ideal, and the story was nonexistent.

In the official press release, Lehto gives his input briefly on what we can expect from this collaboration between DICE and Ripple Effect,

“It is a great honor to have the opportunity to collaborate with DICE and Ripple Effect and lead the charge on expanding the narrative, storytelling and character development opportunities in the Battlefield series."

Regardless of that, this announcement comes at the heels of Dice creative director Lars Gustavsson, who has an incredible twenty-year tenure with the series, leaving the studio. In his legacy, he launched the very first Battlefield installment back in 2002 and was even present when EA acquired DICE in 2006. His involvement even landed him the chance to work on titles such as Mirror's Edge and Star Wars Battlefront among others. As he moves on the other opportunities, he still leaves fans well wishes,

"I've dedicated a substantial portion of my life to Battlefield and I'm very proud to have helped shape this franchise into what it is today. However, I think it's time for something new. Thank you for all your support over the years, especially to all the extremely talented co-workers I've had the pleasure to work with and, above all, the love and support from the community. I'm sure I speak for both of us when I say we're excited to pass the baton to the next generation of Battlefield creators at DICE, Ripple Effect, Industrial Toys, and Ridgeline Games, and to see how the series evolves in their capable hands--you are ready to do this! Farewell and don't forget to play the objective!"
