Dead Space Remake: Technical Director Admits Game is Too Scary to Play at Night

Get ready for the fun.
by Natalie Collazo on January 23, 2023

The technical director of the upcoming Dead Space remake, David Robillard, has revealed that he struggles to play the game outside of daylight hours due to its terrifying nature. In an interview with PLAY magazine, Robillard stated that when he plays the game at night, he can't use headphones because the game is too immersive and becomes too frightening of an experience.

The Dead Space remake has been rebuilt from the ground up in EA's Frostbite engine, with Assassin's Creed Valhalla game director Eric Baptizat and creative director Roman Campos-Oriola at the helm. The developers consulted diehard fans to help keep them on track with their goal of staying faithful to the vision of the original game while also crafting new gameplay content and improvements. However, Robillard admits they have elevated things to a whole new level.

"These things, you know, could have been done [on PS4], but not to the level we're doing them today," he explained in the interview. "And they really add a lot to this sort of genre and make the whole kind of experience come together even more."

Robillard added that the developers needed to find a way to fill the gaps in the game so that the player doesn't feel like "Oh, I've been here, it's fine, I'm safe". He issued a final warning, "No, you're never safe. Like, you will get jumped. Somebody wants your lunch money, and they're not friendly."

Dead Space remake will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on January 27 and is available for preorder in several editions. The game follows engineer Isaac Clarke as one of the last survivors of a deep space catastrophe on the mining ship USG Ishimura.

Fans of the series are eagerly awaiting the release of the game, but with Robillard's warning, it's clear that this remake is not for the faint of heart. So, be prepared to play it with the lights on and sound off!
