Next Far Cry Could Have A More Online Experience

Game as a Service or something else entirely?
by Oliver VanDervoort on October 11, 2021

Now that Far Cry 6 is out, it's officially time for Ubisoft to start working on next installment in the long-running series.

The latest entry was massively hyped, thanks in large part to Giancarlo Esposito playing the role of the game's big villain this time around. However, most of the reviews, even the positive ones, point out that it's a lot more of the same kind of mechanics and plot points that have shown up in previous versions.

It appears that Ubisoft understood that might be the reaction, as rumors have start to flow out about what the next Far Cry might contain.

Earlier this summer Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier noted sources told him that the next Far Cry could go in a “radically different direction.”

Just what that direction might be, is entirely unknown at this point. However, Stephen Totilo of Axios recently confirmed something similar saying his sources had told him that the next game will have a more "online-oriented approach."

Just what that means is also unknown, though one has to wonder if the next game might move closer to something like a Game as a Service. Far Cry 6, as well as some of the other earlier installments, does have some online aspects in that users can play online co-op as they try and free the island of Yarra from a dictator's grasp.

It's hard to know whether the Far Cry series going GaaS would be a good thing, should that be the direction Ubisoft is looking at. It's certainly something to keep an eye on moving forward.
