Gotham Knights has New Story Details But Still No Release Date

The Court of Owls is the main adversary in Gotham Knights.

Gotham Knights

Ever since the somewhat anti-climactic ending of Batman: Arkham Knight, the gaming world has been clamoring for another Batman game to soothe their appetite. After all, the last good Superhero game we got was Spiderman PS4 and to a lesser extent, Spiderman: Miles Morales, so while Marvel has the scene all well and good, DC is still running on fumes of Injustice 2 and somehow Dc Universe Online after almost a decade. While we won't exactly be getting the follow-up to the Arkham Games that many wanted, we will instead be getting Gotham Knights at some point in 2021.

Not a ton has been released about this game to this point, but with a new story trailer released, we finally get some details as to what this whole thing is going to be about. As it was rumored for a while, we finally have confirmation that the game is going to deal with Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and the Redhood's dealings with The Court of Owls. Although they've never made their way to the big screen, the Court of Owls are one of the most fascinating villains in the impressive Batman rogues gallery. While not composed of any one person, the Court of Owls secretly watches and influences Gotham from the shadows and quietly has impacted some major events in the Batman comic world. You can do that research for yourself as I don't want to put any potential spoilers in here, but just know that they have given Batman some of the biggest struggles he has ever faced.

Gotham Knights

The creators of the Court of Owls themselves have reportedly been blown away by what they've done with the story for Gotham Knights, so it's safe to say this won't be just a throwaway live service game with a boring story, but rather a fully fleshed out DC experience featuring some of the more popular side characters. The game takes place in a world where Batman and Jim Gordon are both presumed dead and the honus now falls on 4 previously sidekick characters to band together and take on the Court of Owls. Interestingly enough, in the trailer, it is the Penguin who sends them on this dark journey not as a villain, but apparently as an ally. You know that when one of the most notorious crimelords in Gotham warns you about someone, they will surely mean business.

The most intriguing part of the trailer shows the Bat-signal at one point, perhaps hinting at some mind games being played by the Court of Owls or maybe something entirely different. The gameplay has not been shown yet, but it is expected to be an expansion on the Arkham games' style with more of an emphasis on the RPG side of character building.

Gotham Knights will support online, drop in Co-op, and is expected to release sometime in 2022.
