Why Far Cry Needs To Change

Far Cry has grown stagnant for too long
by Adam Braunstein on October 12, 2021

Far Cry 3 launched in 2012 and acted as a sort of reboot for the franchise that not only shifted the original tone of the series but gave us one of the biggest hits of the year and created a gameplay loop that has been copied and followed by several other franchises and titles since. An underqualified character stuck in a terrifying place, suddenly forced to fend for their lives against an overwhelming force isn't a new concept in gaming, but the way Far Cry framed it was very realistic, brutal, and at times insightful which caused gamers of all ages to flock to it.

That was 9 years ago and with the recent release of Far Cry 6, there should've been a deluge of new features that welcomed the game into the next generation of consoles and unfortunately, there just isn't. Is that to say Far Cry 6 is a bad game? No, not at all, and quite the contrary, it's very good has incredible scenarios and performances for the lead characters with Giancarlo Esposito giving a particularly standout performance. The problem though is that there is a feeling of sameness that pervades every single game that's come out since Far Cry 3. It's Ubisoft, so yes, we know its going to be open world and we know the encampments of enemy soldiers will need to be cleared out and towers will need to be activated and all that, but the question now is what else do you have?

What is the point of this open-world exactly? There is little to nothing to do in between missions in Far Cry 6 and the crazed animal chaos that made Far Cry 5 so much fun is all but gone here. Instead, we delve into the realms of ridiculousness with outlandish pets and slowly, the realistic facade gets pealed away for some pure stupidity. It gets even worse with some of the dialogue in this game too as the Guerilla fighters are far too lax and jokey to be taken seriously as an actual force. There is this B movie schlock to the proceedings here at times and the tone is violently opposed to the scenes with Giancarlo Esposito spouting uber-serious monologues and shooting up boats full of innocent people. That tone could be fixed in a variety of ways, but the most notable way would probably be to limit the open world.

Shocking I know, no open world in 2021? How could they?! Well, consider this, The Last of Us 2 while polarizing, didn't fall completely into open-world mania and instead had a pseudo open-world that lead to a more focused approach and some amazing results. God of War PS4 did the same thing and again, the experience was a focused and action-packed one. Far Cry needs to look at these series for inspiration. Enough with the fetch quests, enough with unlocking towers and cleaning out one enemy encampment after another. Craft specific experiences. Make encounters unique, meaningful, and powerful. The pieces are all there in these games, but the execution just feels off so much of the time. Far Cry 6 should've been a gritty and disturbing view of a fictional version of Cuba. Instead, we're leading around goats and training crocodiles to fight for us.

Far Cry 6 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
