Mass Effect 3 Developer Reveals Why Colors Were Used in The Ending

Mass Effect 3's ending originally looked a little different.

Mass effect 3 endings

Mass Effect is without a doubt one of the best and most influential RPG series to ever grace gaming, but despite that, the series has often been overshadowed by one glaring thing, the ending. Now, ending a game series as iconic as Mass Effect was never going to be an easy feat. When you are dealing with universe-ending implications and several systems that determine what way your story will play out compared to others, making just 3 endings is an incredibly difficult task. That being said, the backlash to the ending was on the same level of the backlash that the ending of Game of Thrones received, so you know it wasn't good.

Part of the reason the ending didn't go over so well is that after 3 games, you simply were given three choices as to what your ending would look like. All the work you put in gathering allies and making peace with warring alien species was thrown to the wayside as you picked three endings. Red, Blue, and Green. Now, each one had massive, galaxy-wide affecting implications, but the simplicity of choosing them was a bit far-fetched in many gamers' eyes. According to ex Bioware Montreal animation director Dave Wilkinson, these colors were used early on just to differentiate which ending he was working on. In no way did he think the colors would end of being in the actual ending of the game. Further than that, the original ending was supposed to be even more out there with Commander Shepard actually plugging into the Citadel itself and contacting the Reaper Queen AI in a virtual world where you could help choose the fate of the galaxy. The end result would have been a bit different, with Shepard either going nuts and destroying the Citadel in defiance of the Reapers and actually end up wiping out Earth from the Citadel crashing into the planet, or the already present endings of Shepard either agreeing to become the god of the Reapers of a synthesis of all AI and organic life.

Mass Effect 3 Ending

The difference this would have made is debatable as it really still would have come down to three choices. The bottom line is that no matter what this ending was, fans would have never been happy. Think of the most famous franchises and stories of all time. Lord of The Rings, Star Wars, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos. What do they all have in common? The fans hated the ending! That's because people hate when something they love is over and done with and in reality, there are no perfect endings for stories like these. With Mass Effect Legendary Edition releasing recently, you can experience the whole trilogy from start to finish with all of the DLCs, including Leviathan, which at least went a long way to straightening out how Mass Effect 3 ultimately finishes.
