Alliance Bid Farewell To S4

The second-longest serving members part ways with Alliance
by Tit Krajnik on October 25, 2021

Alliance's Dota 2 team parted ways with its long-time player and captain Gustav "s4" Magnusson. The news surfaced on Sunday, October 24, just a few days following the departure of Linus "Limmp" Blomdin and Artiom "fng" Barshack.

S4 Leaves Alliance

Alliance announced that they're parting ways with s4 ahead of the 2022 Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) season. It marks the third departure from Alliance's Dota 2 division of the month, following Limmp and fng, who left the European esports organization on Thursday, October 21.

"Today Alliance announces an additional departure in their Dota 2 division. Join in and wish farewell to Gustav "S4" Magnusson," read the announcement.

S4 was one of the longest-serving members of Alliance an iconic member of the team. He first joined Alliance in April 2013 as a part of the inaugural roster, which won The International 2013. S4 remained with the team until September 2014, when he left for Team Secret.

After spending a year with Secret, s4 re-joined Alliance for one more year before leaving for OG and Evil Geniuses. As a part of Evil Geniuses, s4 won bronze at The International 2018 and made it to the quarter-finals of TI9 before he returned to Alliance for his third and final stint.

S4 re-joined Alliance in April 2020 to fill in the gaps left behind by Neta "33" Shapira and Adrian "Fata" Trinks. As a captain, s4 led Alliance throughout the 2021 DPC season, helping the team find plenty of success; however, much of their achievements were limited to regional competitions.

Throughout the 2021 season, Alliance performed well regionally but underdelivered in international LAN events. However, despite struggling in DPC events, Alliance have done well enough to qualify for TI10.

Unfortunately, Alliance failed to achieve much and finished the season-culminating event in tied-ninth place. The underwhelming performance eventually led Alliance to rebuild their roster for the 2022 season and replace three of their players – so far.

Alliance Look Forward

With the departure of Limmp, fng, and s4, Alliance made it clear that they want to start fresh in the 2022 season. And while cutting ties with s4 seems like a drastic move, the European Dota 2 squad felt like drastic changes were needed.

"It's always sad to say goodbye to a friend," said Jonathan "Londa" Berg, CEO and co-founder of Alliance.

"Especially a friend as special and important to the son of Magnus himself, S4. We all wanted more from this TI but that doesn't mean we didn't give it our all this year. Because we did. Everyone that reaches this prestigious event does."

S4 has served as a member of Alliance for a combined over four years and has registered 1,243 games, which is the second-most in the organization's history. The only player who has played more games for Alliance is Londa (1,329).

With 1,243 official matches, s4 has played the sixth-most games for a single organization in Dota 2 history. The leading player in that department is Danil "Dendi" Ishutin, who has recorded 1,513 games for Natus Vincere.

Having parted ways with three of their Dota 2 players, Alliance now fields only two members in their active lineup for the 2022 season in Nikolay "Nikobaby" Nikolov and Simon "Handsken" Haag. The 2022 DPC season is set to start on Monday, November 29, leaving Alliance with just over a month to find and sign three new players to their squad.
