Resident Evil’s Creator Could Return To The Franchise

Shinji Mikami, who created Resident Evil and directed its first and fourth instalments, could return to the franchise.
by Luke Luby on September 21, 2021

It’s no secret that the Resident Evil franchise has had its ups and downs in recent years. Thankfully, the series seems to be on an up-swing with some of the recent games. Resident Evil: Village, for example, has fans the most excited they’ve been in years for the franchise. Now, it looks as though this move from strength to strength could continue.

According to an interview with Variety, horror game legend Shinji Mikami could be returning to the franchise. Mr. Mikami is best-known for creating the franchise, alongside directing its first and fourth games. Most recently, he directed The Evil Within. The 2014 title was set to be his final directorial project.

The possible return, however, does have a caveat; Mr. Mikami says that he’d need some creative allowances for a possible sequel. Should he return to Resident Evil, he says that he would have to completely envision the game beforehand. While he didn’t specifically refer to the franchise, any possible return is speculated to be linked to the franchise.

As Shinji Mikami said to Variety:

"My thinking is that if I had a chance to make a game from the beginning to end that's completely my vision, then definitely, that would be my big last project as director. It would probably be more fitting as that 'last game I direct' kind of thing."

Should Mr. Mikami return to the franchise, it would help bring it back to its roots. This seems to be what Capcom, the studio behind the series, looks to be doing. Resident Evil 5, which forsook much of the horror for action, was widely panned and is seen as a low for the series. Since then, Capcom has pivoted more toward the classic horror that the franchise is known for.

Bringing Shinji Mikami would help bring that full circle.
