Destiny 2’s Subclasses Could Be Getting An Upgrade

Destiny 2 director improves subclasses
by Luke Luby on December 23, 2020

Over the past several months, Destiny 2 has gotten a few new classes, alongside upgrades to said classes. That’s without even mentioning each of the subclasses and all of the customization options. However, this has meant that some of the other subclasses have started feeling a little old.

That being said, it looks as though the developers could be upgrading some of them. In an interview with Polygon, the game’s director, Luke Smith, noted that they were focusing on specific classes in the short-term. In the long-term, however, fans of the game can expect some changes.

Speaking about some of Destiny 2’s subclasses feeling a little stale, he said:

"I can totally imagine [it] in 'Luke Fantasyland.' You know, all the Supers using the same system, that sounds awesome. But also the Supers that we have in the game would be an edited list. It would be something that's edited toward more identity than what we have today. The classes [Hunter, Warlock, and Titan] are kind of homogenous."

He went on to add that the aim was to create unique identities for each of the classes. As a result, this could make them vital to a team in their own ways. As attractive as this sounds, it could mean some negatives in the long-term. Specifically, it could lead to Bungie sacrificing some Supers for the benefit of others.

Much of this would focus on overlaps in abilities. As a result, there could be class jealousy. However, this could also lead to more experimentation by players. Regardless, much of this is speculation at this point. While Mr. Smith seemed optimistic about the potential changes, he notes that they haven’t yet been approved.

If they do get approved, it will still be a while before the change is added to Destiny 2.
