T1 Part Ways With Interim LoL Head Coach "Stardust"

Stardust will explore new opportunities in 2022
by Tit Krajnik on November 09, 2021

Korean League of Legends team, T1, announced the departure of interim head coach Son "Stardust" Seok-hee, after he requested to look for new opportunities ahead of the 2022 season. The news surfaced on Monday, November 8, a week following T1's semi-finals exit from the 2021 LoL World Championship.

Stardust Set To Explore New Opportunities

Stardust got promoted to the position of T1 interim head coach in July 2021 to replace Yang "Daeny" Dae-in, who got cut from the organization due to the team's poor performances. Even though Stardust lacked experience coaching an elite LoL team, he has turned things around for T1, who started posting much better results with the 31-year-old in charge.

T1 eventually finished the LoL Champions Korea (LCK) Summer season in fourth and claimed silver in the LCK Summer Playoffs. Adding to that, T1 won the LCK 2021 Regional Finals, thus securing a spot in the main event of the 2021 LoL World Championship.

Even in the season-culminating event, T1 did not disappoint. The three-time LoL world champions won their group and made it into the semi-finals after eliminating their regional rivals, Hanwha Life Esports, in the quarters.

However, their road to the record fourth title came to a halt when T1 lost to the Korean champions, DWG KIA. Nevertheless, regardless of T1's failed attempt to claim the organization's fourth Summoner's Cup, T1 exceeded expectations and proved to the world that their mid-season slump was nothing more than a minor bump in the road.

But despite the team's solid performance on the big stage, Stardust decided to leave the organization. This leaves T1 in a tough spot, as they now have two months to find a new coach ahead of the 2022 season.

"At the request of 'Stardust', we part ways as he looks for a new opportunity," read the announcement.

"We truly appreciate his contributions to the team and wish him all the best in the future."

What's Next For T1?

It's unclear what T1's plans are and whether the Korean esports organization has already found a replacement. As it stands now, coach Kim "Moment" Ji-hwan, who stepped up in July alongside Stardust, will assume control of the team; however, T1 will likely want to search for a proper replacement.

As an organization, T1 is known for fielding only elite LoL coaches, so it will be interesting to see who will be appointed at the helm of the team ahead of the 2022 LCK season. Some speculations suggest T1 could re-sign Kim "kkOma" Jeong-gyun, who has been with the organization between 2012-2019, leading T1 (then SK Telecom T1) to three LoL World Championship titles.

KkOma is currently the head coach of DWG KIA, who lost the 2021 LoL Worlds grand finals against Edward gaming on Sunday, November  6. Despite DWG KIA's failed attempt to defend their Worlds title, the team has yet to hint whether kkOma's job is in danger; however, if DWG KIA decides to freshen up the coaching personnel for next season, there is a chance we might see kkOma back home, with T1.
