OG Part Ways With “SumaiL” and “Saksa”

OG will look much different in the 2022 season
by Tit Krajnik on November 09, 2021

The two-time The International champions, OG, announced the departure of Martin "Saksa" Sazdov and Syed Sumail "SumaiL" Hassan as the European esports organization looks to rebuild its Dota 2 team for the 2022 season. The news surfaced on Monday, November 8.

Saksa and SumaiL Look For Opportunities

OG announced the departure of Saksa and SumaiL following OG's disappointing run through The International 10, where the two-time champions failed to defend their title. OG finished the season-culminating tournament in seventh-eighth place after they lost to the eventual champions, Team Spirit.

While OG has not commented whether the team's poor showing at TI10 led to the departure of Saksa and SumaiL, the team unveiled that the duo decided to leave the team to look for new opportunities.

Both players originally joined OG when the team was rebuilding their roster after TI9, when Anathan "ana" Pham, Sébastien "Ceb" Debs, and Jesse "JerAx" Vainikka stepped down from the team. While Saksa remained with OG since January 2020, SumaiL left OG in April 2021 to enjoy a short stint with Team Liquid before returning to the team in June 2021 to help OG qualify for the TI10.

“Both of them are incredible players and even better teammates. I am sure they will have a transformative effect in any organization they choose to join, and they will continue to prove their world-class talent,” said JMR Luna, CEO of OG Esports.

“Martin, Sumail, you will be missed. Thank you for sharing this adventure with us and thank you for always being warm and kind to us all.”

OG Looking To Rebuild

With the departure of Saksa and SumaiL, OG is now left with only three active members, including Ceb, Topias Miikka "Topson" Taavitsainen, and Johan "N0tail" Sundstein. This leaves the team with two massive voids that OG will need to fill before the 2022 Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) season begins.

Meanwhile, Saksa and SumaiL likely won't have a hard time finding a new home as some of the most sought-after free agents of the current offseason.

Saksa is widely regarded as one of the best supports in the Dota 2 scene, whereas SumaiL doesn't need a special introduction as a player who has consistently delivered in any team he has played. Billed as the "King", SumaiL is the youngest player to win an International, doing so at 15-years-of-age in 2015.

Beyond that, SumaiL has two TI bronze medals from 2016 and 2018 and numerous Major titles, which he won as a part of Evil Geniuses.

The future of SumaiL and Saksa should be announced shortly, whereas we might need to wait for a bit longer to know what’s next for OG. The European esports organization has found itself in a tricky spot, as there were rumours of Topson looking to take a break from Dota 2, while Ceb announced The International 10 was likely his last tournament as a professional player.

That leaves OG with only N0tail as the only player who is likely to compete in 2022 and four spots that will be left vacant in the coming weeks.
