Faker Decides To Re-Signs With T1

The King Is Back!
by Tit Krajnik on November 20, 2021

Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok has re-signed with T1, the Korean League of Legends esports team unveiled on November 19. The announcement cleared the uncertainty surrounding the LoL GOAT's future with the organization where he spent his entire esports career.

Faker Is Not Leaving

Since the League of Legends free agency started last week, rumours were suggesting Faker might leave T1 ahead of the 2022 season. Some speculations tied the 25-year-old with other LoL Champions Korea (LCK) teams, while other rumours suggested the best player in the history of LoL could join TSM in the LoL Championship Series (LCS).

However, all the rumours proved false on Friday when T1 announced its franchise player had extended his contract with the team.

Faker has been a part of T1 since February 2013, when he first entered the world of competitive League of Legends. The 25-year-old has since helped the team win countless tournaments and titles.

That includes three LoL World Championship titles in 2013, 2015, and 2016 and two Mid-Season Invitationals in 2016 and 2017. Beyond that, Faker has carried T1 to seven domestic titles, cementing T1 as the most successful Korean LoL team in history.

"Honored that Faker has chosen to re-sign with T1," said Joe Marsh, CEO at T1.

"These past few days have been a lot of sleepless nights and long conversations with Faker and his team. Excited to continue on this journey together."

Roster Changes Follow

Despite T1's renown as the best team in history, success was hard to come by for the Korean powerhouse in recent years, having failed to win a single title since the LCK 2020 Summer Playoffs. Still, the team showed some life at the recent LoL Worlds, where they made it to the semi-finals, only to get eliminated by the defending champions, DWG KIA, in a closely-contested five-map thriller.

Despite T1's resurgence towards the end of the 2021 season, the Korean organization has made it clear that heavy roster changes are on the cards. While keeping Faker was at the top of T1's priority list, most of the remaining members have found themselves on the chopping block.

T1 have already parted ways with interim head coach Son "Stardust" Seok-hee and player development coach Park "Hajinsun" Hyunseon. Besides that, T1 released support Ryu "Hoit" Ho-seong, mid laner Lee "Clozer" Ju-hyeon, jungler Moon "Cuzz" Woo-chan, and ADC Park "Teddy" Jin-seong earlier this month.

Having fielded an extended roster last season, T1 have plenty of replacement players available. As it stands now, T1's LoL roster for the 2022 season is complete with Kim "Canna" Chang-dong in the top lane, Moon "Oner" Hyeon-joon as a jungler, Lee "Gumayusi" Min-hyeong as ADC, Ryu "Keria" Min-seok as support, and Faker as the starting mid laner.

It remains to be seen whether T1 will look to make further adjustments to its roster ahead of the 2022 season. While it's unlikely the team will add new starters, it's possible that T1 could add a few substitutes.
