Topson Steps Away From Competitive Dota 2

OG lose another member ahead of the 2022 Dota 2 season
by Tit Krajnik on November 21, 2021

Topias Miikka "Topson" Taavitsainen announced on Friday, November 19, that he'll be taking an extended break from competitive Dota 2 for the next season. The 23-year-old will instead be taking some time off to focus on his family.

OG Lose Another Core Member

With Topson's decision to take a break for the 2022 Dota Pro Circuit Season, OG is left with only its captain and co-founder, Johan "N0tail" Sundstein, on the active roster.

Topson's decision to step away from Dota 2 comes only a day after Sébastien "Ceb" Debs confirmed his retirement from the competitive scene. OG announced the news with an official post on its website and a short video on YouTube, in which the Finn explained his decision.

One Of Dota 2's Greats

Topson is widely regarded as one of the best players ever to touch Dota 2. He first joined OG in June 2018 as a relatively unknown pubstar, who started showing signs of greatness in 2017 with SFTe-sports.

He later played for an all-Finnish Dota 2 team, 5 Anchors No Captain, before getting picked up by OG ahead of The International 2018. At the time, OG were a complete mess, as they struggled to make much noise in the European Dota 2 scene, even struggling to make it through the TI qualifiers.

However, the addition of Topson helped OG find new heights, eventually resulting in one of Dota 2's most memorable underdog stories. Billed as one of the outsiders entering TI8, OG stormed through the tournament and claimed the Aegis of Champions, helping Topson win the coveted title in his debut appearance at the event.

With Topson, OG would extend their dominance into 2019, winning back-to-back TI titles, a feat that no other team managed to achieve throughout Dota 2's history.

Following OG's win at The International 2019, Topson got married and had a daughter but was unable to spend much time with his family as the 2020 DPC season got underway. Dragged back into the competitive scene, Topson was forced to spend long periods away from his family, bootcamping with OG.

The team was going through difficult times in 2020-2021, scrambling to form a stable roster. They eventually found some traction towards the end of the 2021 season, with the addition of Syed Sumail "SumaiL" Hassan, who helped them qualify for TI10.

Unfortunately, the two-time champions were unable to defend their crown, losing to the eventual champions, Team Spirit, in the third round of the lower bracket.

What's Next For OG?

Topson's departure comes at turbulent for the European esports organization, which lost four of its members over the last few weeks. At the start of November, OG unveiled the departure of SumaiL and Martin "Saksa" Sazdov, while Ceb announced his retirement from the competitive Dota2 on Thursday, November 18.

Now, OG lost another core member in Topson, who has, despite his young age, decided to step away from the game to spend more time with his family. This leaves OG with only N0tail as the only active member of the team ahead of the 2022 season.

Even though Topson's absence will be felt, the Finnish Dota 2 superstar has noted that he only plans to take the next DPC season off before reevaluating his options and deciding if he wants to return. And while Topson's return remains a mystery, OG now have other things to focus on – building a new roster.

As it stands now, OG have yet to reveal their plans; however, some rumours are suggesting former Team Liquid's support Tommy "Taiga" Le could be joining the team. Meanwhile, OG's coach Mikhail "Misha" Agatov could step down from his position and return to pro play for next season.

Outside of those two rumoured changes, OG have not commented on the future of the Dota 2 roster. Still, we can expect more information to become available soon.
