KT Rolster and Gen.G Swap Top Laners

Rascal Joins KT Rolster, while Doran takes over as Gen.G top laner
by Tit Krajnik on November 24, 2021

Two Korean League of Legends teams, KT Rolster and Gen.G, swapped their top laners on Tuesday, November 23. As revealed, Choi "Doran" Hyeon-joon joined Gen.G to replace KT Rolster's new top laner Kim "Rascal" Kwang-hee.

Rascal Leaves Gen.G After Two Years

Last week, Gen.G announced the departure of top laner Rascal, who has been with the team for the past two years. The 24-year-old joined Gen.G in November 2019, after spending most of his professional career with DragonX (formerly Kingzone DragonX) and has been a core member of the Korean esports organization ever since.

Since joining Gen.G, Rascal has achieved plenty of domestic success, consistently placing inside the top-three across LCK regular seasons and playoffs. However, the team struggled to achieve much internationally.

In 2020, Rascal made his second appearance at LoL World Championship, but the team couldn't deliver. Gen.G crashed out of the season-culminating event in the quarter-finals, losing to G2 Esports (0-3).

Despite their underwhelming run at the 2020 LoL Worlds, Gen.G entered the 2021 LoL World Championship with the same-five man lineup and achieved better success. Unfortunately, their road to the Summoner's Cup ended in the semi-finals, where Gen.G lost to the eventual champions, Edward Gaming (2-3).

While the team has shown signs of improvement, Gen.G decided to freshen up its LoL roster for the 2022 season, replacing four of their players. Besides Rascal, the team also parted ways with mid laner Gwak "Bdd" Bo-seong, support Kim "Life" Jeong-min, and jungler Kim "Clid" Tae-min, who got replaced by Han "Peanut" Wang-ho.

Rascal and Doran Swap Places

Rascal's departure from Gen.G coincides with the signing of Doran, who joined the Korean LoL team as its new top laner. The two Korean players swapped places, with Doran joining Gen.G and Rascal signing a contract with KT Rolster.

Besides the addition of Rascal, KT Rolster also acquired Gen.G's former support, Life, who will replace Jang "Zzus" Joon-soo.

Doran joins Gen.G after spending the last year with KT Rolster, who failed to achieve much last season. As one of Korea's top teams between 2015-2018, KT Rolster fell off significantly in recent years, most notably in 2021.

While KT Rolster haven't been good since their quarter-finals appearance at the 2018 LoL Worlds, last season marked the organization's worst year in competitive LoL. KT Rolster not only failed to compete for the title but did not qualify for a single split playoff.

In the spring split, KT Rolster finished sixth with a 5-5 record and locked in a seventh-place finish in summer, with a 4-6 record. Poor results ushered in a roster overhaul, which started with the addition of T1's former jungler Moon "Cuzz" Woo-chan last week, and now Rascal and Life as new top laner and support.

Offseason Is Far From Over

We're a week into the LoL offseason, and many teams are already finalizing their rosters. With the addition of Life and Rascal, KT Rolster are now missing only one more player to lock in their 2022 roster and are in the same boat as Gen.G, who – like KT Rolster – need to find a new mid laner to join their ranks.

It's currently unclear which players the two organizations will pursue; however, many reputable sources seem to have an idea who the two teams will add.

As reported, KT Rolster is pursuing EDward Gaming's mid laner and the 2021 LoL Worlds MVP, Lee "Scout" Ye-chan. Meanwhile, Gen.G are supposedly looking to sign former Hanwha Life Esports mid laner Jeong "Chovy" Ji-hoon.
