Boston Call of Duty League Team Starts to Form

The pieces are slowly falling into place
by Tit Krajnik on December 17, 2021

The recently announced Boston Call of Duty League (CDL) franchise has signed its first two members on Thursday, December 16, announcing a new head coach and general manager. As revealed, the former CoD esports pro Zach "Zed" Denyer has been appointed as the head coach, while Denholm "Denz" Taylor takes over as the franchise's general manager.

Zed and Denz Join Boston CDL Team

The Boston Call of Duty franchise which got announced on Wednesday, December 15, by Oxygen Esports and Boston Uprising, has yet to reveal its name for the 2022 CDL season. However, things are slowly falling into place for the league's newcomer as it acquired the first two members of the team.

As revealed on Thursday, Zed has been appointed as the head coach of the Boston CDL team and will work alongside his former teammate Denz, who will take over as the general manager.

Denz is a former Call of Duty esports pro player who has retired from pro play in September 2020 after spending the last year of his career with Paris Legion. The Australian has since served as a coach of Subliners Academy and EastR to develop his knowledge of the game further.

As one of the most successful CoD players from the Asia Pacific region, Denz is mostly known for his time at Mindfreak and Reciprocity. As a coach, he won Call of Duty Challengers 2021 Cup #13 North America while at the helm of Subliners Academy.

Zed joins Oxygen Esports organization as a head coach, marking the first coaching stint of his esports career. The 24-year-old has made his debut in the scene in 2015 with Excel Esports and has since played for some of the biggest CoD brands. That includes Elevate, HyperGames, and Team Reciprocity, where he competed alongside Denz.

The duo achieved plenty of success together. They placed fourth at the 2019 CWL Playoffs and made it to the top-six at the CWL Championship 2019.

After leaving Reciprocity, Zed and Denz played side-by-side at Paris Legion during the inaugural Call of the Duty League season. And while the team finished second in the London Home Series, the Legion could only manage a ninth-10th place finish at the Call of Duty League Championship 2020.

Boston Targeting Veteran Players

The Boston CDL franchise still needs to find players to represent the brand in the 2022 season. It's unclear how the Call of Duty roster will look like, but some sources suggest that Oxygen Esports has its eyes on a mix of veteran players and young talent.

As rumored, the Boston CDL squad will consist of Anthony "Methodz" Zinni, Thomas "TJHaLy" Haly, and young talent Dylan "Nero" Koch, formerly of Los Angeles Guerrillas Academy. Potentially, the team could also add another young talent in Capsidal, who has made a name for himself in the CoD Challengers League.

We can expect Oxygen Esports to reveal more information about its CDL roster in the coming weeks, likely by the end of the year. The 2022 CDL season is set to begin on January 21, with the Kickoff tournament, featuring all 12 franchise teams who will compete in the first official CoD esports event played on the newly-released CoD: Vanguard.
