Cyberpunk 2077 Sold 13 Million Copies Through Dec 20

That's Even Counting Refunded Copies
by Oliver VanDervoort on December 26, 2020

Cyberpunk 2077 has had its fair share of issues. Despite what can only be described as a disastrous launch, the game still had an incredibly success release, money wise. In fact, recent reports indicate that CD Projekt Red's latest project sold over 13 million copies of the game, through December 20. That number is both physical and digital copies combined.

That's still an incredibly impressive number when you consider it also takes into account the copies that were refunded and returned due to the many problems of launch.

The numbers were released by CDPR itself, as a way to try and calm down investors. The company wanted to make it clear that even if the game had severe problems, the CD Projekt Red is one that still generates a ton of interest. The firm also announced it had amassed more than eight million copies through preorder.

It also bears pointing out that the December 20 date the company mentioned is only 10 days after the game launched. That means Cyberpunk 2077 sold more than 13 million copies in under two weeks. The company clearly has to be wondering what might have been had it been finished. If the bugs had been ironed out before it was the released. If the company had a few more weeks to make sure the game was up to snuff, it seems like this might have had the chance to be the biggest AAA launch in console history.

As it is, Cyberpunk 2077's launch appears to be comparable to game releases at the top of the charts. That includes games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and the most popular Call of Duty titles.
