Assassin's Creed: Valhalla Won't Get Naval Combat

One Feature Assassin's Creed Fans Love Won't Be In Valhalla
by Oliver VanDervoort on January 15, 2021

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla actually released a few weeks ahead of the Xbox Series X and PS5. Despite that, Ubisoft has made it clear it wants the game to look and play great on the next generation consoles. So far, while the game is certainly pretty, it's fallen short of looking and feeling like a truly next gen project.

Speaking to Game Informer, Producer Julien Laferrière talked a bit about the plans his team has heading into the new year. While it's already known that there are a couple of big expansions planned, Laferrière also talked about hot fixes and patches that are less about content and more about performance. He also talked about how there was one piece of content that they thought about adding, early on but decided against as they were working on the project.

"One thing I can say that didn’t make it through that we thought might work very early on was naval combat," he told the publication. "We actually found out that Vikings were not doing much naval combat; we thought they might be shooting flaming arrows like in Odyssey. But they just didn’t do that. So, we said, 'There’s no sea in our map, only rivers ... we’re going to treat the ship more like a vehicle.'"

That doesn't mean there's no chance there won't eventually be ship to ship battles, but it appears for now, the only fighting you're going to be doing that involves boats is when you travel to another land to attack and pillage.
