Sony To Purchase Bungie in Seismic Announcement

As though gaming news in 2022 couldn't get more interesting.
by Natalie Collazo on January 31, 2022

Just after Microsoft's announcement of their multi-billion dollar acquisition of Activision Blizzard, PlayStation has announced that they are acquiring Destiny developers, Bungie. While we are all aware that Destiny is available across multiple platforms, it's safe to say that Bungie helped put Xbox on the map as the premier platform for multiplayer first-person shooters when they were behind the development of the Halo franchise. The blog in which the announcement was made details the acquisition as a partnership where Bungie will continue to work as an independent, multi-platform studio and publisher.

As such, we believe it makes sense for it to sit alongside the PlayStation Studios organization, and we are incredibly excited about the opportunities for synergies and collaboration between these two world-class groups. I have spent a lot of time with Pete Parsons, Jason Jones, and the Bungie management team to develop the right relationships where they will be fully backed and supported by Sony Interactive Entertainment and enabled to do what they do best — build incredible worlds that captivate millions of people.

Pete Parson explains his excitement and also highlights that the company will continue to independently develop and publish their own games but now with the backing of a march larger entity. This is a great relief for fans as it means that future Bungie games will not be console or timed exclusives.

While this isn't what the announcement is about, now would be a perfect time for Bungie to announce if they are currently working on any new IPs or content for any of their existing games. Both PlayStation and Bungie did an excellent job of keeping this information a secret so it wouldn't be a surprise if something more were to be announced soon.
