Assassin's Creed: Valhalla Expansion Is Becoming a Standalone Game

Basim is getting a chance to steal the spotlight
by Adam Braunstein on February 09, 2022

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is one of the more divisive games to come out in the last few years. While its amazing graphics and weighty combat system made for some epic moments, the drawn-out story and lack of stealth mechanics made fans split on the game, and that feeling did not leave during the additional two DLCs that came shortly after its release. There is currently a third DLC on the way that looks to expand on the fantastical elements of the game, so those hoping for a return to the heyday of Assassin’s Creed will still be left wanting.

What is interesting though is the announcement of yet another DLC that is going to feature Basim, aka the antagonist who shows his hand late into the story of Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. The DLC was expected to release in 2022 or earl 2023, but it seems that now, according to Bloomberg, the project codenamed Rift will actually be a standalone game featuring Basim. Not only that, but the game will emphasize stealth once again.

This decision happened late in 2021 and it was made because of Ubisoft’s lack of incoming titles in the next year. So far, the only other title that Ubisoft has in the pipeline is Assassin’s Creed: Infinity, which is a completely mysterious online title that is possibly going to follow a formula similar to Fortnite, and this recent announcement has fans both intrigued and terrified, which is the general reaction to most Ubisoft titles.

The Basim standalone game is rumored to take place in the Abbasid Caliphate and is going to cover the period of time that happened directly before the main story of Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. This title may or may not cover the events following the game, so whether or not we get to mess around in the future as Basim remains to be seen.
