Front Mission Is Getting a Remake On Nintendo Switch

Playstation classic is coming to Nintendo Switch
by Adam Braunstein on February 09, 2022

In the 90s the RPG genre was incredibly crowded. You had every company imaginable trying to come out with the next Final Fantasy and while plenty of contenders emerged, very few ever really managed to shake the thrown that Squaresoft (now known as Square Enix) had built. Because there were no real contenders to the king, Squaresoft flexed its creative muscles and came out with a brand new series called Front Mission. The tone was darker than Final Fantasy and grounded in a realistic world, giving it a far different air to it than its other series.

It was originally released in Japan in 1995 and the rest of the world in 1997 and then was later ported to the Nintendo DS in 2007. Other than that, there has been no way to play the game for a long time. The interesting mix of RPG mechanics and grid-based combat that Front Mission presented melded well with its mech-based combat, and the following titles in the series kept getting better and better.

While it never achieved huge success, it had a niche following and now, Front Mission 1st has been confirmed to arrive on Nintendo Switch sometime this summer. There is also confirmation that Front Mission 2 is in the works as well, though there is no confirmed date for either at the moment.

The gameplay hasn’t been elaborated on just yet, so it's uncertain whether Square Enix is giving this a direct remake approach where the turn-based, grid combat will return, or if it will go the route of something like Final Fantasy VII Remake and create a real-time system to support the new age graphics.

Surprisingly, there hasn’t been an announcement regarding other consoles, and this would mark one of the first times that Square Enix has announced a game strictly on Nintendo Switch.
