Lost Ark Needs Some Server Help After Becoming Steam's Second Most Played Game Ever

Lost Ark needs some server assistance to support all of its players
by Adam Braunstein on February 15, 2022

Say what you want about MMORPGs, but whenever they drop, whether they’re great or horrible, they attract a player base like few others can manage to do. In a rare turn of events, Lost Ark has become so insanely popular following its launch that it already requires a second region of servers to be created in Europe. It seems that the popularity of the game has completely overwhelmed the initial server setup and because of that, backup is needed and thankfully, already on the way.

While it’s being worked on as fast as possible by Smilegate, the new server region has yet to be released as that will require some extensive work by the team as well as the QOL testers. The existing region range has about 7 to 19 servers, so it can be assumed that the new server region will cover a similar amount of ground.

There are some negatives here and the biggest one is that your character and progress will not carry over into the new region. That means the new region is largely for newer players, so if there are issues on current servers for you, switching to a new one will mean you’ll need to start a new character. Lost Ark has only been out for a week so theoretically, that won’t be a huge issue for most, but you know MMORPG players, it’s possible some of these players are already in the endgame, so they need to stay put on their servers and not make a quick jump.

The current issue caused by all of these players is mostly the long queue times. This has led players to be either locked out completely until the room opens up or getting in fast just out of pure luck. It’s not uncommon to see MMORPGs struggling a bit with server sizes at the start of launches and usually unless it's supported by a massive company, there are far more issues to deal with. Compared to the launch of something like New World, Lost Ark is looking great right now and when these new server regions go up, it should be smooth sailing for the new face in the genre.
