New Mass Effect Game In Prototype Stage

Mass Effect 4 production is underway.
by Adam Braunstein on February 26, 2022

Mass Effect is a game that’s been on one hell of a rollercoaster ride the last few years. The highly-anticipated Mass Effect: Andromeda had one of the worst launches in recent memory and although it was actually a good game, it was far from what fans were expecting, so the sales and support for the game were way lower than they were should’ve been. Bioware then attempted to make the jump to the Destiny type MMO universe with Anthem and let's just say that didn’t work at all either.

In order to jump back into gamers' good graces, Bioware released Mass Effect: Legendary Edition to rave reviews. The faith was restored temporarily and the announcement of a sequel not to Mass Effect: Andromeda, but the original Mass Effect trilogy got fans thinking positively about the series once again.

Since then though we’ve got nothing outside of a little trailer showing us Liara Tsoni and ship, and that was plenty to tide us over for a short time. In addition to the work on Dragon Age 4, it now appears that Mass Effect is in the prototyping process right now.

According to a blog post by Bioware’s General Manager Gary McKay, the work has begun on the anticipated title. That doesn’t mean that it’s anywhere close to being done yet though, as the prototyping stage is pretty much just the designing of the skeleton of the game, with things like an alpha and beta prototype far down the line.

It was clear that Bioware would be focusing on Dragon Age 4 before Mass Effect 4, and that is likely the reason they released Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. It was a move to tide the fans over while the big one got underway.

While the wait is painful for our next journey in the best sci-fi universe gaming has ever seen, you can be sure that Bioware wants to nail this one. They lost the fans with Mass Effect: Andromeda, threw them in the trash with Anthem, and then slowly began to pick them out of the trash with Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.

I believe in Bioware, they produced some of the best games I’ve ever played, and despite the changes in people there over the years, they know what they need to turn to succeed. Figure out what made the Mass Effect Trilogy so magical and look to that as inspiration for this sequel. It can’t fail harder than Anthem so at least they have that.
