Virtus.Pro Rename To "Outsiders" For ESL Pro League Season 15

The players will compete under a new banner
by Tit Krajnik on March 07, 2022

After ESL banned all Russian esports organizations from attending its events, Virtus.pro Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players announced they'd still compete in the tournament under the name "Outsiders".

The Outsiders

As members of Virtus.pro, Dzhami "Jame" Ali, Alexey "qikert" Golubev, Mareks "YEKINDAR" Ga?inskis, Timur "buster" Tulepov, and Evgeny "FL1T" Lebedev were facing a possibility of not being able to compete in ESL Pro League Season 15 after ESL banned all Russian esports organizations with ties to the government from its events.

But the Russian squad found a way around the ban by competing in the event under a different name, as an independent stack named "Outsiders".

Virtus.pro had been amongst two organizations identified by ESL as being linked to the Kremlin, which has been hit with numerous sanctions over the last two weeks. As confirmed, Virtus. pro's ownership leads to Sogaz, a state-run insurance company, which the European Union has recently hit with sanctions.

The Russian esports organizations did not take the ban lightly, criticizing ESL's decision, claiming that Virtus.pro is not connected to the Russian government and called the move a "prime example of cancel culture".

Despite getting banned from ESL, Virtus.pro did not forbid its players from attending the ESL Pro League. However, the team has to compete under a neutral name and must promise not to represent the organization and its sponsors.

What About Gambit?

Gambit Esports are the second Russian esports organization that ESL prohibited from attending the upcoming CS:GO tournament due to ties to the Russian government. At this time, Gambit Esports have yet to commend on the situation, nor is it clear whether Gambit players will attend the event. Still, we should get more information about Gambit's plans in the coming days.

The ESL Pro League Season 15 kicks off on Wednesday, March 9, with the opening matches of Group A. The Outsiders have been seeded into Group B, which starts on March 16, while Gambit is in Group C, which will begin a week later.
