E3 2022 Has Officially Been Canceled

Will the former gaming show giant return next year?
by Natalie Collazo on March 31, 2022

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) was once the biggest show of the year within the gaming industry and has now become a shell of what it used to be. Earlier this month, it was announced that E3 would be a digital-only event, much to the expectation of fans from all over the country as the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic continues to persist. Today, it was announced instead that the entire show will be canceled for this year.

This news breaks after Will Powers, a PR lead for Razer, tweeted that he received an email detailing the cancellation from the Entertainment Software Association. Many others in the gaming industry corroborated this story with their own tweets explaining the same thing.

But what does this mean for the show as a whole? There has been a dwindling relevance for the show over the last several years with a resurgence in different presentations of media like Nintendo Directs and State of Play shows. While most of the experience of E3 is related to the audience's reactions to announcements, social media and streaming have also evolved that over the years.

This could very well be a very elaborate April fools joke, but it's a day too early to say. Check back with DailyGamer for more news on the future of E3 as this story develops.
