Toronto Ultra Add Scrappy As A Substitute

A Second substitute joins
by Tit Krajnik on April 11, 2022

Toronto Ultra announced the signing of Thomas "Scrappy" Ernst, who joins the Call of Duty franchise as a substitute player. The 19-year-old joins the team after a successful stint with the Ultra Academy roster, which he led to the CDC Minnesota Open 2022 title at the start of this month.

Toronto Ultra Add Fresh Blood

Toronto Ultra announced the signing of Scrappy on Sunday, April 10, unveiling the 19-year-old as the second substitute player on its Call of Duty roster. For the youngster, this marks the first time he will get to play in the big leagues, having spent all of his career competing in CoD Challengers and some lesser tournaments.

The addition of Scrappy expands Toronto Ultra's roster to six members, now consisting of Ben "Bance" Bance, Cameron "Cammy" McKilligan, Tobias "CleanX" Juul Jønsson, and Jamie "Insight" Craven, and second substitute Charlie "Hicksy" Hicks.

The roster changes follow Ultra's disappointing start to the 2022 CDL season. As the 2021 CDL Championship finalists, Toronto Ultra have yet to find tier footing this year, although they have succeeded in the CDL Kickoff Classic.

However, since winning the CDL Kickoff Classic in January, Toronto Ultra never came close to winning another title. Their best placement came from CDL Major 1, where they finished fourth. In the second CDL Major, Toronto Ultra ended the qualifiers in 11th and crashed out of the Major in the first round against the eventual champions Los Angeles Guerrillas.

A Talented Rookie Joins

Scrappy is a 19-year-old pro CoD: Vanguard player who has never before competed in the CDL. He started his career way back in 2018 when he competed in some lesser tournaments, but he hadn't joined a proper team until December 2020, when he landed in Slammed.

Since then, Scrappy was a member of several teams, most notably UYU, before he got picked up by the Toronto Ultra academy roster in February 2022.

With Toronto Ultra Academy, Scrappy did not need long to find success, leading the team to a runner-up finish in CDC North America 2022 Cup #8 and a title from CDC Minnesota Open 2022, which Scrappy won just last week.

During CDC Minnesota Open 2022, Scrappy stood out with his performances and was the leading actor in Toronto Ultra Academy's success. It earned him worldwide recognition and his first professional contract with a prominent CDL squad.

However, while Scrappy had shown enough with the academy lineup, he joins Toronto Ultra only as a substitute. As noted by the team, Ultra does not intend to make any immediate changes to its lineup, meaning that Scrappy will – alongside Hicksy – be on stand-by.
