Cloud9 Signs Gambit Esports CS:GO Roster

2018 Boston Major champions are back
by Tit Krajnik on April 24, 2022

Cloud9 has returned to competitive Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on Sunday, April 24, with the acquisition of the former Gambit Esports roster. The news surfaced one year after the North American esports organization withdrew from professional CS:GO.

Players Find a New Home

As reported, Gambit Esports' CS:GO roster has been up for sale since March, when many tournament organizers – such as ESL and BLAST - banned all organizations with ties to the Russian government from being represented in the tournaments. Being unable to represent Gambit Esports' banners, the roster around Vladislav "nafany" Gorshkov continued competing under a neutral banner - as Players.

Most notably, Players competed in ESL Pro League Season 15 and in the second PGL Major Antwerp Regional Major Ranking event, and they achieved reasonable success in both.

Now, months after being unable to be represented in any CS:GO tournaments, Gambit Esports struck a deal with Cloud9, who bought the ex-Gambit lineup to re-enter the CS:GO scene. The news surfaced just two days after the current no.3 team in the world secured a Legends spot at the Major Antwerp, by beating Astralis, Sangal, and Anonymo in the qualifying event in Romania.

Cloud9 Is Back!

By signing the Russian lineup, the Los Angeles-based organization will officially return to the CS:GO scene for the first time since last March, when it transfer-listed its entire roster. At the time, Cloud9 cited being unable to set up their team in North America due to the ongoing COVID pandemic as the main reason for the decision.

But it took Cloud9 just a year to find a way to re-enter the CS:GO scene, and by signing the former Gambit roster, the NA esports organization has set itself up for success.

Cloud9 has a rich and illustrious history in the CS:GO scene, which the organization first appeared in 2014. Most notably, Cloud9 is the only North American esports organization ever to win a Major, and with a new roster, C9 has suddenly emerged as a serious title contender for the next Major.

Interestingly, even though the ex-Gambit roster is ranked as no.3 in the world, the lineup has been heavily criticized by the community for its lack of achievements on LAN. But the newly-signed squad now has a chance to prove all the doubters wrong as they get ready for the first CS:GO Major of 2022.

The PGL Major Antwerp is set to kick off on Monday, May 9, and conclude on Sunday, May 22. It will take place at  Antwerps Sportpaleis in Antwerp, Belgium, featuring 24 CS:GO teams and a $1,000,000 prize pool.
