Splatoon 3 Will Launch 9th September

The sequel is now available for pre-order
by Joe Wilcock on April 24, 2022

The battle between Inklings and Octarians will commence once more in the 3rd entry of the Splatoon series. 5 years after the release of its predecessor, Splatoon is due to launch on September 9th on the Nintendo Switch.

First announced in a Nintendo Direct on February 17th 2021, details have been incrementally handed out to players through proceeding Nintendo Directs. We know that Salmon Run and Turf War will both return as well as a brand new campaign mode for players to conquer. Brand new weapons will be at your disposal too, granting combatants novel strategic avenues to best opponents.

In a press release, Nintendo provided an apt set-up for the upcoming sequel:

"Enter the Splatlands, a sun-scorched desert inhabited by battle-hardened Inklings and Octolings. Splatsville, the city of chaos, is the adrenaline-fueled heart of this dusty wasteland.

In the single-player mode, you'll join Agent 3 in a fight against the unruly Octarians and discover the secrets of a mysterious place called Alterna and the Fuzzy Ooze.

Even in this desolate environment, Turf War* reigns supreme and battles rage in new stages located in the surrounding wilds, such as the majestic Scorch Gorge.

Dynamic new moves help these fighters dodge attacks and cover more ground, along with a new bow-shaped weapon to sling ink and new special weapons, such as the scuttling Crab Tank.

Take control of Agent 3 and fight against the evil Octarian army alongside the New Squidbeak Splatoon in Splatoon 3's story mode. Discover the secrets of Alterna, the Fuzzy Ooze and how it connects to the mode's theme, "Return of the Mammalians.

The Salmonid are back, and they've got some new surprises in store for the Inklings and Octolings in the co-op mode: Salmon Run!

- A brand new entry in the Splatoon series

- Discover the Splatlands, a new sun-soaked region with trendsetting inhabitants

- Experiment with new styles for Inklings and Octolings

- 4v4 Turf Wars* are back, with new stages, new manoeuvres, and new weapons"

Developed in house by Nintendo, Splatoon 2 has proven to be one of the best selling titles on the Switch. Selling more than 12.21 million copies, it is reported that Splatoon 2 sold twice as much as the first game in the franchise (which was released on the Wii U), a testament to the series' growing popularity. It has since been featured in Super Smash Bros, Mario Maker and Mario Kart 8, making the Splatoon series a bonafide Nintendo mascot.

Out of the top 10 best selling games on the Wii U, Splatoon was the only game featured that wasn't part of the Mario or Zelda franchises. Considering the relative failure of the Wii U, it is commendable that Splatoon was able to establish itself during a turbulent time for Nintendo.
