Embracer Group Purchases Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix Montreal

For the bargain price of $300 millionĀ
by Joe Wilcock on May 02, 2022

Embracer Group of Companies

Swedish company, Embracer Group (formally known as Nordic Games and THQ Nordic), has announced today the acquisition of 3 major Square Enix studios. Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal will all be part of the merger, bringing with them dozens of iconic IPs.

The deal in principle is worth $300 million, which seems a snip in the current market. As part of the purchase, they will gain "1,100 employees across three studios and eight global locations" as well as rights to the franchises that come with the aforementioned studios. This means that Embracer now holds domain over "more than 50 back-catalogue games" from Square Enix Holding including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain.

Within the press release on their website, Embracer clearly outlines their reasoning and purposes, citing that they plan to release new Tomb Raider and Deus Ex games at the very least and gave mention to the potential of new Thief and Legacy of Kain titles.

The Co-Founder and Group CEO expressed his excitement about the new project:

”We are thrilled to welcome these studios into the Embracer Group. We recognize the fantastic IP, world-class creative talent, and track record of excellence that have been demonstrated time and again over the past decades. It has been a great pleasure meeting the leadership teams and discussing future plans for how they can realize their ambitions and become a great part of Embracer,”

- Lars Wingefors, Co-founder and Group CEO, Embracer Group

Square Enix themselves reciprocated the sentiment:

”Embracer is the best-kept secret in gaming: a massive, decentralized collection of entrepreneurs whom we are thrilled to become a part of today. It is the perfect fit for our ambitions: make high-quality games, with great people, sustainably, and grow our existing franchises to their best versions ever. Embracer allows us to forge new partnerships across all media to maximize our franchises’ potential and live our dreams of making extraordinary entertainment,”

- Phil Rogers, Square Enix America and Europe CEO

Phil Rogers gives mention to the shroud of mystery that surrounds Embrace Group, whose name won't be familiar to most. However, over the past couple of years they have been making sizable waves through lofty acquisitions, not least of all being the purchase of Gearbox Software ($1.3 billion) and Saber Interactive ($525 million). Additionally, they were already the parent company of Deepsilver and THQ Nordic, which leaves Embrace with an embarrassment of riches at their disposal.

Here are but some of the games that the Swedish company now owns:

  • Saints Row
  • Goat Simulator
  • Dead Island
  • Metro
  • TimeSplitters
  • Borderlands
  • Darksiders
  • Kingdoms of Amalur
  • Satisfactory
  • Wreckfest
  • Insurgency
  • World War Z
  • Legacy of Kain
  • Tomb Raider
  • Deus Ex
  • Theif
  • Destroy All Humans!
  • Biomutant
  • Duke Nukem
  • And many many more

It appears as though these beloved IPs are in good hands if their statement is anything to go by and we could be seeing many of our favorite franchises return, after being dormant for so long.
