Nintendo Breaks Personal Game Sales Record

And that's considering that they didn't have Animal Crossing!
by Natalie Collazo on May 10, 2022

Nintendo has released its earnings report for 2021 and it looks like it was the company's best year yet in regards to game sales! For both their first-party and third-party games, sales rose by 1.8% year-on-year to 235.7 million units. For Nintendo, that's the best software sales figure that the company has ever experienced. Unfortunately, the Switch hardware didn't fare too well in comparison since there have been issues regarding availability.

They named two different reasons for the above:

1. Shortages of semiconductor components

2. The lack of a game that drives hardware sales

Of course, that's difficult to really believe because 2021 was the year for many Pokemon releases including the critically-acclaimed Pokemon Legends: Arceus and the Diamond and Pearl remakes. Some games including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons also made the list as last year's greatest console hits for an added total of 16 million units sold.

The company still has a long way to go if they want the Nintendo Switch to surpass Nintendo DS sales; their most successful console to date with 154.02 million sold in comparison to the Switch's 107 million. Let's see what the 2022 report will bring next year with the latest generation of Pokemon as well as a flurry of other games being released this year.
